Bowties either look amazing or dorky. There is no inbetween. To pull it off requires being in shape, having the right hairstyle,the slim fitted clothes and the right accessories to pull off the "I'm so good looking I can wear this" vibe.

I have noticed that the recent young people trend is to wear tiny bowties with things like skinny jeans and sweater vests, which were it not for the cheap ubiquity would not be an unattractive look.Originally Posted by LabelKing

Here's the rub: it is less about experimentation or personal creativity and more about an increasingly mainstream uniform. Take a slim shirt of varying colours and/or prints and add rumpled or slim denim, occasionally with rolled up hems, a small pre-tied or clip-on bow and a footwear range of lace-ups or plimsolls. Some might wear trilbies or cardigans. As this look can be purchased cheaply and simply, this is, indeed, the result
The Matt Smith Doctor outfit posted above is a good example of an actor and design team applying some creativity by hybridising this trendy aesthetic with a professorial antecedent (the Harris Tweed and the desire for a bow tie came from Smith himself). As per my prior link, the costume's influence spreads as I type

He is to be commended for the effort.
But his outfit is an abomination.
Pants are too long, jacket too big. Nobody is saying he needs to go MTM - just get something correctly sized. That's not trad, it's just ill fitting.

I wear them all the time and get rounds of positive comments (as do most of the guys I know who wear them). Females seem to particular like them (not that that matters).
On a summer weekday you can sit near the courthouse and count bowties and/or seersucker suits walk past all day long. On a Sunday, choose a nice church in the city and you can do the same.
Granted, I am south of the Mason-Dixon line. I'm sure in Seattle, Portland, or Phoenix it would be a bit different.
