Richmond VA recommendations

Will be passing through Virginia briefly for business. One of the stops is Richmond. I heard it's all BBQ all the time. So...

1) Are there any healthy lunch spots downtown?

2) Any good recs for a nice/tasty dining experience?

Thanks bros!

I traveled to Richmond fairly regularly ten years ago. Here's what I remember:

By "downtown" I assume you mean the Shockoe Slip. The Tobacco Company and Sam Miller's are two standbys in that area that serve standard American fare. The Hard Shell is a good seafood restaurant. Nearby in the Shockoe Bottom is Havana 59, a really good Cuban restaurant. Further out, in the Fan District, I liked Davis & Main.

I'm sure the Richmond dining scene has changed greatly since I've been down there, so hopefully others can chime in with their suggestions.

2nd on the tobacco company. A guy from Phillip Morris took me there. That was fun. Possible to eat marginally healthy there.

Bill's BBQ is a dive... but I love the food.

Check out Mamma Zu. Excellent Italian food.

For lunch, Cuba cuba is a good option.

I've lived in Richmond my whole life (unless you count being away at college), so here's a few places I'd recommend. If you're really looking for BBQ, you can't pass up Buzz & Ned's on the Boulevard, right off Broad Street. Also, The Crazy Greek is a little hole in the wall Italian/Greek restaurant off Broad & Staples Mill (really good Greek pizza). Bottom's Up Pizza is fairly well known, but over-rated (IMHO, but to each his own). Mamma Zu's is good Italian food as well, so there are plenty of options. Hope you find something to your liking!

A good healthy spot is Ipanema in the fan. Great vegan food. My carnivorous friends even love it. Plus, you'll usually find some good lookin tattoed VCU honies there.

+ 100 on Mama Zu's! My absolute favorite in Richmond. Close to the VCU campus. Be prepared to wait for a table. The whole cooked fish is fantastic! They only take cash or AmEx.

The Black Sheep may be what you want for a healthy eatery. Ideally a lunch place. Interesting salads and sandwiches, an updated take on many classics. They feature a lot of locally sourced food. Across Broad Street from VCU.

Most recent visits to both were in December of '09.

I was just in Richmond last week. I can't believe I'm typing this, but by far the best carnitas I've ever had (this coming from a southern California resident) was at La Bamba, on 19 N. 18th street in downtown Richmond.

+1 on the recommendation for Ipanema, even if you aren't vegan. And Sticky Rice is pretty good for fusion-ish Asian food.
