I had one that I bought for $150 when I was younger. Went into the window, was really loud, it let bugs in around its side. But cooled the room to 55F in 120F outside weather.... Frigid Air I think...

If you have the money, get something else.

These are great options for installations where ductwork is impossible or cost-prohibitive.

??? In North Dakota don't you just open the window a crack for 5 minutes?

I think Daikin is known for power and commercial use (hotels, etc.), but maybe not as quiet as the others mentioned.

I stayed in a hotel in Rome with a Mitsubishi unit with some ridiculous name, Mr. Cool or something similar. Worked astoundingly well.

I assume these have to be mounted on an exterior wall?

No it can be on an interior wall, but you need to run electrical cabling and copper tubing through the walls and to the exterior unit.

we put one of these in last summer. it really is that quiet. and it really workswell. i think all the machines work pretty much the same ... big difference is energy efficiency, at least in cali above a certain threshold you get a rebate. also, the installer is very important. get a good one.

I've also found Daikin to be the most reliable and quiet from my limited experience with airconditioners.

I remember being very impressed the first time I saw a daikin in action the first time, because of the low noise level and high efficiency.
