Chicken Soup for the Body

OK, its been a beautiful weekend here in NYC, and I've spent it all cooped up on my couch with a miserable cold with severe congestion. Had the doc get me an antibiotic to take if its a bacterial infection, but I think its just a bad cold.

I drink shitloads of water (yesterday over 200 fl oz) and take Advil Cold & Sinus for the congestion. What do you guys do (eat/drink) that helps you recover a little more quickly?

I think the anti-biotics will take care of it pretty quickly.

I find that if i take Advil C&S then it turns from a cold into a sinus infection pretty quickly.

Hope so, I'm the worst patient. My ENT said I can keep taking the AC&S if it helps my symptoms...no one has their "sick" food. Chicken Soup with a squeeze of lemon is nice. Don't eat it, but sniffin Vics helps me too. How bout hot stuff, like wasabi?

Chicken with Garlic sauce and pork fried rice couldn't possibly be good for the body, or could it??

A cold is a virus. It's foolish to ask for antibiotics, and more foolish for your doctor to prescribe them. Time heals a cold, everything else is just managing the symptoms.

not foolish when everytime you get one, a sinus infection follows.

Pho is the best.

^ cosign on the pho. A really good, really spicy kimchi-jjigae made from really ripe kimchi can clear you up and warm you up from the inside as well.

Pho. Also, V8 with lots of hot sauce in it.

+1 or anything with Blairs Death Sauce on it. All kidding aside a stiff drink really helps you forget.

Ginger and honey ... - get a large piece of fresh raw ginger - preferably organic (any root that grows in the ground probably is better if it's organic). - use a grater to grate a peeled hunk into a large mug. - add a large tablespoon or more of honey. If you can get it, try and get raw honey. Even better - but expensive - is New Zealand Manuka honey. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leptospermum_scoparium - get some lemons - the ugly organically grown ones are better as you want to use the peel as well; use them two ways: 1) use a grater to get the yellow rind (zest) but not the bitter pith. 2) Then cut off a quarter, half or squeeze the juice into your mug. - top up with hot water; let it steep for a minute or two and drink. - drink as often as you need; if you can take it - eat the remaining ginger with a small spoon. - you might be tempted to add booze to make a toddy. Don't. Contrary to popular belief, the research seems to strongly indicate that alcohol is not conducive to recovery. or, do it spartan-style and break of a nice sized chunk of raw ginger (cleaned & peeled), pop in your mouth, chew & swallow. I don't think the ginger in the tubes is as effective. Raw ginger is readily available anyways, so there is no excuse for not getting the real thing. -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ginger ... it should also help with any nausea and other GI distress.
