Having a barber/salon pick a hairstyle for you, good or bad idea?

Thread Starter
I've literally had a similar haircut for years and have never splurged. I've regularly went to great clips/supercuts/etc.I always thought my hair looked better short...but it only looks better short when it has pomeade/gel.

I started growing it out and people (including people who cut my hair) mentioned how thick my hair looks...so I take that as a good thing.

The problem is...though my hair is growing out...I don't exactly have a style. Am I better off finding a magazine and picking someone out whose hair I like? Or will a good hairdresser know what will look good for face shape/head size?

Thanks.

Do NOT let the stylist decide. Find a pic.

Unless your hair stylist is one of those well-known $500+ haircut stylists, you are better off choosing your own. You can look up online what styles will best fit your head shape, ect. and bring in a picture of what style you end up deciding upon that.

I think you'd be fine either way but you're probably best off with a combination of ideas of what you like and a competent stylist. The two of you can work together.

I had a good buddy who is a fancy hair stylist.... i would tell him what i wanted and he would nod- uh huh humm etc...then go ahead and do what he felt worked best for me....

Best to have some ideas and then if they are good they will now what will work for you.
Also if you stick with the same person after 2 -3 visits they will get a better feel for your hair.

Bit like a tailor - you should find one you are comfortable with and be loyal to them.

A couple of my stylist friends (ranging from fresh from Marvel college to ~5 years experience) dislike when people say "just do whatever you think looks best." Like everyone else is saying, bring a picture or a general idea of what you want. Always voice certain details that you want - they'll appreciate it.

First of all, you should not expect to get a great style or a great haircut in places such as Super Clips or Great Cuts. I am not slamming the low cost haircutters but that is what they are, low cost hair cutters and you usually do get what you pay for.

Bringing in a picture is a good start but it doesn't mean that the haircut will look good on you. It is similiar to admiring a sports jacket on the rack but once you put it on, it looks terrible on you.

There is no substitute for a great consultation. First, find a stylist or barber that specializes in male, specific cuts. They are more likely to give you a tall, lean, masculine look. Second, schedule the time for a detailed consultation. Explain the style you are looking to achieve, what your lifestyle is, how often you get your hair cut, whether or not you use product. The barber/stylist can then advise you regarding your hair type and condition, your head shape and your face shape. It all goes together and simply bringing in a picture won't give you the look that's most appropriate for what you want. Third, revisit the stylist on the frequency they suggest. It may take several cuts to achieve the style.

Personally, I don't think it's a bad idea. It's not something I do often; but I have let barbers/ stylists take the reigns on occasion. It is part of their job description, don't forget. Any competent barber should be able to come up with something decent. I'm willing to give their experience and expertise the benefit of the doubt. Especially if we have a nice rapport and I've been going to them for years. If it looks absolutely terrible, skimp on the tip and never go back to them. The hair will grow back. Don't stress it.

A good barber that specializes in male cuts will help a lot. But it also depends quite a bit on your hair and the style you're looking for. Some peoples hair just falls beter in to place then others so most shorter cuts will at least look decent even if its not cut that well. Other people (like myself) have hair that doesn't what they want regardless of what you do about it. If you have hair like that it's often a good idea to bring some sort of example of what you're looking for and make sure you tell your barber what your hair is like. He might have advice and will keep in mind when cutting you.

Bad idea. I would only let my guy (yes, I have a guy) do this if really wanted a change. Unless you really trust them then the answer is always no.
