Suggestions for a USA holiday for 15 days

Hi I am thinking of visiting the USA this year instead of Europe during the summer vacation. I have been visiting Europe for the past 5 years during summers and am getting a little bored of it. I last visited the US in 1992 (when I was 14) and haven't been there due to the distance between the US and India. But since I am bored of Europe I am willing to sit in the plane for 16 hours in the hope that a US experience would be much different from an European one. I was thinking of staying in NY for 5 days and request suggestions as to what to do and where to go for the next 10 days. I would prefer to visit a cooler place as the temperatures in India are already 42 C. I also dont want have to a very hectic trip in the sense that I dont want to go to 4/5 places in 10 days and would prefer to visit 2/3 places in 10 days. My wife and 2 year old son would be travelling with me. The reason for this thread is that I tried to shortlist some places and got quite confused as there is so much to see from Grand Canyon to Niagra Falls. As such would appreciate some help. Thanks for reading and your responses. Note: Due to the time difference I may not respond immediately to your suggestions

Come to the coast and seeour beautiful, oil soaked beaches and wetlands!

As you know, America is huge. If your starting in NY and only have a week extra then Id highly recommend you focus on one area. Most airports arent easily accessible, so getting around would be tough. A few days in NY. Shoot up to Niagra falls and canada for a day. Over to boston for a few days, a drive through the country and end your trip in washington dc for a few days.

Next time you come you can do chicago, grand canyon and west coast.

David, thanks for the suggestions but I would prefer not to rent a car and hope to do the whole by public transport. Also i would like to drop a destination from those to make it even less hectic

Thanks for the suggestion. I had no idea what New England was till I searched for it .

It looks the ideal place.

What would this sound like

NY 5 nights
Boston 4 nights
Cape Cod 7 nights

ive never been but cape cod for 7 days seems like a lot.

You can take public transportation to the major cities and sites. Ny to washington isnt bad, and you can hang out with Conne!

I dunno what you are going to do in cape cod for 7 days. If anything cut boston to 3 and head to like disney world or california.

If you'd really want a beach experience, you should consider Martha's vineyard or nantucket instead of cape cod.

This sounds good - although I prefer the Vineyard or Nantucket to the Cape.

This is OK but I would like to substitute either Boston or Washington for a smaller place. 3 big cities out of 4 places I am visiting would be too much city for me.

Any suggestions ? How is Buffalo / Niagra Falls BTW ?
