As someone pointed out above, viewed by their price placement in the horsepower wars, I can see where some... less sophisticated car enthusiasts might think they're underpowered, as they tend to think dollars = horses. The most frequent comparison they throw out is the Corvette formula ("For that much money, you coulda got X Corvettes!").

Far more people will pay a premium for more horsepower than will ever need it/be able to use it, and more power to them. That doesn't mean the cars wer8-cylinder cars aren't fine as-is.

-12s have a smoothness all their own, horsepower aside, when given an option, I'd prefer a -12.

Yes, less sophisticated ones... or ones that actually like to use cars at tracks. What kind of car enthusiast wouldn't want a car with more power? Let's see, a V8 R8 with 420HP at $115k can tackle the Ring at ~8:04, but a new V8 M3 with 415HP at $60k can do it in 8:05. An Audi V10 R8 with 520HP priced at $150k does the lap in 7:44. Sorry, but based on those V8 numbers, the R8 definitely benefits from the V10's increased HP; I'm thinking I would have more fun tossing the V10 around Laguna Seca any day of the week than the V8 version.

Same here, I'd definitely opt for a 12. Its smoothness is intoxicating.

R8 V8 too. Mid low 4 sec 0-60 just is not that impressive anymore for a mid 100k car. I drove one a while back, and while I was perfectly happy with it, it really feels no faster than a 997S. That said, the V10 as it stands may not have been a perfect answer. Especially since its not even as strong as the Lamborghini version.

In the case of the Aston, I would rather see a proper Vanquish V12 replacement than the Vanatage V12. I think I heard its not coming to the US anyways due to crash test failures.

An excellent line-up. W12 vs. V8 aside, which of the Phaeton and A8 did you prefer? To me the Phaeton seems more sedate with a ridiculously nice interior, while the A8 is more on the sporty side.

Do not remember if I posted this, but this is what I drive in Signal Red. Mine is a US model with different headlights and bumper style.

Thanks. Besides the engine difference, the 2 cars (Phaeton and A8) are 2 completely different machines and you are absolutely right that the Phaeton is more sedate/elegant with a English country club like interior (targeted at the Benz buyers), while the A8 is the sporty/trendy one (targeted at the BMW buyers.) Now which do I prefer? The one I didn't trade off.

Jokes aside, I prefer the Phaeton for its uniqueness and understated elegance. I can glide under the radar without drawing too much attention anywhere I go.

This is what I like about the W12 Phaeton. It's a shame they no longer come to the U.S.
