Ouch. I didn't know they had trouble that early. I believe the E46s used GM auto transmissions.

BTW, I think I may have found a durable FCAB: the Powerflex ones have a design that reduces the forces that tear up the OEM ones. I have the UUC versions, but they look to me like rebranded (and recolored and more expensive) Powerflexes. The ride isn't any harsher, and you do get a bit more steering feedback, as it feels surprisingly closer to the Cayman.

Thanks. It's a 523i with the M52B25 (TÜV?). I inspected the belt and cannot see any crack or fluid on it, but I was planning on changing it when I replace the water pump (for peace of mind) this summer. Good idea about the plugs, I will pull one out to see if they were changed before or not. I am doing a front brake pad job in the next 2 weeks, I have to find a garage with tools first (apparentely this is how you work on your car here, since you're not allowed to do it in the street and i don't have a garage).

I'm also awaiting a bmw scanner from some chinese website, seems like a good buy:

I just poked my head in here to see what's going on and I noticed some HRE / ADV discussion on the previous page. I just went through a lot of debate on this topic myself and wound up with a set of ADV1 wheels on my new car. They were mounted up two weeks ago.

Knowing ADV's history with 360Forged and hearing some of the stories of wheel problems on the boards I was nervous about dealing with them. I reached out to friends who have owned ADVs for 3 years and all reports were that they were easy to work with and that they were still very happy with the end product. While I have seen one thread about a legitimate product failure from them (on a 22" 3-piece Cayenne wheel, IIRC). It seems like a lot of the ADV bashing on the boards is residual bitterness from the 360Forged days. I gather that they have made a ton of changes to the way they do things since then and that they my experience with my order backs that up. Fitment and finish on my set are EXCELLENT and they hit their promised delivery dates for me even in the midst of their busiest season.

Lots of wheel companies use machine time in larger shops to make their wheels. It's industry standard practice. There are really only a few machine shops in the US that do this sort of machining work. HRE is one. MHT is another and is where ADV machines their product. There is another in Florida, but I forget it's name. A rumor that I've heard is that even HRE is renting out machine time in their shop to outside wheel manufacturers.

Anyhow... I haven't posted up my new car in here since I made the switch from my RS4 in January, so I owe a few pictures of it how it stands now. I wound up in a '13 991 Carrera 4S:

Drove one of those bad boys recently, threw it into reverse instead of first and nearly wrecked it. Classic. On some of the older "exotics" i have drove reverse was down and to the right, or you really had to push down on the shifter to get it into reverse, this really didn't have that feel. Nice car though, a blast to drive forward once I got the hang of it.

I DD this in NYC so I sit in a fair amount of traffic with it and don't hate it yet after a few months. lol. I guess that's good.

As a whole the transmission isn't as comfortable as I was used to in the Audi, but it shouldn't be. This is supposed to be a more edgy, sports car, not a powerful, sport sedan. The 7MT is really well suited to it's role here.

Clutch is much stiffer than my previous car, but livable. Engagement is pretty abrupt, but not jarring once you get accustomed to it.

The shifter is great. Perfectly located and really precise feeling. I'm still getting used to 7 forward gears. I forget I have 7th a lot of times.

Thanks! The new 991 model uses a leather called "espresso" vs the 997's "cocoa". I wasn't a big fan of the old color, but when I saw espresso for the first time I knew it was what I wanted. I based the rest of the choices in the car around that interior.

Bronze is making a bit of a surge right now, but it's still pretty rare IMO. Looking at the stuff that ADV and HRE are pushing out I'd guess it's like 1/10th of what they do in black. I think it ties in well with my interior. My factory wheels are titanium and they look good with it too, but it's a bit cold looking. They are being kept for winter duty and have snow tires on them at the moment.

I'm not a big fan of black wheels... no contrast between the wheel and tire. They tend to make the wheels disappear and the wheel wells look like black holes.

I was my dealer's first Carrera 4S allocation (had a deposit down for a year +). I have a good relationship with them, so I was able to work a decent discount on this one. I hear that people are typically seeing some decent discounts on 991s (4-7%) depending on the dealership.

And thanks for the kind word on the photos... I love taking them.

Cracking photographs on a very nice car.

Not a condemnation but I never understand the American fascination with changing the wheels on a car. In the UK if you're older than 21 and putting new wheels on your car you get some very odd looks. I would conservatively estimate that only 1 in 3,000 cars gets new wheels in the UK.
