Cars We Drive! - Page 534

Platinum is connected to Midway, I think (? maybe jet knows) - I rented the 650Ci from Midway since it's at LAX and I flew in from overseas, but I saw Platinum offering the same cars. Their garage is a mixed basket and they only have one example of each car oft times, esp for the nicer cars.

ohohoho, there is a US region selectable for that site! although they only offer the Gallardo and F430...but as luck would have it all the rental locations are in Florida icon_gu_b_slayer[1].gif

dunno if i would ever do it at $1500 per day though. the Panameras and AMG's are like 300-350.

Just checked and saw the Gallardo is $1500 in Ft. Lauderdale, maybe if I have money to burn, but i dont.....smile.gif

I'd gladly rent an AMG @ $300/day, but $1,500 for a supercar? No thanks.

I'd rather buy a pair of nice shoes with that money :P

Besides, what's the value prop in renting a super car from a Hertz type place? Sounds like the same price range as those places that rent out super cars exclusively.

Guys,

There's an E46 M3 I'm seriously interested in with low miles and the color combo I want. The current owner seems to be a freak when it comes to maintenance and the car is in MINT condition.

The one downside, if there was one, is the fact that it's got the SMG transmission. Should I steer clear just for that one fact? Owner says that it has been a very reliable car during his ownership.

Here is the link to his FS thread: http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=746605

Thoughts?

I'm actually (pleasantly) surprised his car hasn't sold yet!

the SMG transmission is fine. in my opinion, only "manual purists" and those who would absolutely hate the harshness of the shifts under hard acceleration are the only people who should not buy SMG.

the dude is asking a lot for the car though, so you'd have to decide whether the OCD maintenance and recordkeeping, as well as the included mods, are worth the premium. Carbon black is my favorite color on the E46 M3. one more thing - it's not clear what mods are still on the car and what have been removed.

I would never buy an automatic sports car but I am a manual purist to the core. Listen to hroi.

Sounds like a very meticulous M3 owner; however, it surprises me that he would allow the sunroof to remain broken throughout his ownership of the car. For myself, everything has to be working properly on a car, and I'm not as OCD about a car as he.

I am too. If he really wants a traditional stick, he's probably going to get annoyed with it and regret the buy.

I wouldn't want it, personally.

IIRC its fairly simple to swap from SMG to manual as its the same transmission actuated differently.

Really? What about the paddles?

It used the same gearbox, but the swap isn't so simple.

It looks to be fairly overpriced, and the color combo while nice isn't rare. He's asking around Interlagos Blue + ZCP + 6 MT money, and the car has none of those things. I could never get behind the the SMG on the E46. The Getrag DCT is a proper semi-auto, but the SMGs in the E46 and E60 have always felt tacked on because they were. I do think the SMG has some cool quirks (paddle hold for hill hold, both in for neutral etc.), but it's not a great box IMO.

I would not get the SMG. How well it works seems to vary from car to car. For example, some E46 M3s will do a rev-matched downshift just fine, while others require the driver to manual blip the throttle. For that kind of money, I'd wait for a 6MT in stock condition. I would not get a modded car unless I know the owner well and the mods are sensible. Half of his mods (headers, spacers, K&N, software) aren't.

2006 Volvo S60 T5 and a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

And in the summer, this:

700

1978 Mustang II 2+2 with a dual-quad, tunnelrammed 331 stroker, Hilborn dragster scoop, T-tops, 4-point roll bar, and '68 Vette 3" side pipes.

Spousal unit wants to trade the Volvo for an Audi A5 this year. I have nearly -- nearly -- convinced her that we should wait a year, and sell the hot rod and trade in the Volvo and pick up a Gen III Porsche Cayman.

Nearly.
