Went around the block the long way today at dusk and just saw interesting car after interesting car, wondering if it was gonna get any better, and it did:
-a yellow Ferrari Daytona coupe
-about 100 ft away a really clean dark grey R32 GT-R on matching color center/polished lip 18" Work S1's
-another 50 ft away in a parking lot, a recent black Arnage T parked in a spot where I normally see a bayside blue R34 GT-R
-an Alpina E24 (not sure it was one of the really rare turbo ones or what) B7 coupe
-190E 2.5 Evo II with the huge spoiler
-a previous-gen CL600 with some full-treatment tuner package, might've been Lorinser or something (this was the lowliest car I actually noticed apart from the plebe cars)

That was like, 100 yards, along a really boring main street of run-down shops. Japan is crazy.

WHOA! What a beast! The torque in the 550 is ridiculous, I can't even imagine what that thing must feel like. My wife has recently taken a liking to the truck so I've lso had the pleasure of using the S for the last couple of weeks. I could really get used to this . . . wink.gif

I find the night vision to be useless. I used it for the first few weeks with the car, but now I don't even bother to turn it on. It looks cool and all, but I find it to be impractical. Enjoy the 600!

TC, the torque is beyond insane....just when your think it cant pull more...it pulls your body back harder into the seat and you feel is in your face! The dynamic seats are superb in turns, thats one feature that works as claimed, and massage is not too bad.
JayJay, agree totally, the night vision is not only useless, its a dangerous distraction. I took this picture with my 10 yr old daughter in the passenger seat and she likes it, as you can see my revs are sedate.

Ok, this is like the 100th time I read about high end cars being super expensive to maintain and being unreliable - and I just don't get it. Of all the people I know who own and drive cars like VWs and Mercedes' (including family) no one ever had any bigger problems with them. Why does it seem that Americans especially are having so different experiences? Cars here get serviced every, say, 6-8k kilometres, and are to be checked every two years by government employed engineers. True, they can be a pain in the ass, but they point out things like "ohh, you'll have to change the brake pads soon!", which is kinda expensive, but avoids greater damage to the car.

 

Could that be the huge difference? Do you American guys not have a mandatory check for cars?

 

Not trying to be snarky here, this just really interests me.

This interests me as well; my father has always had Audis from new keeps them for 3 years then sells them. Bar a couple of snags with windscreen wipers needing replacing I can't remember a fault in the last 10 years. These cars have also run the gamut from A8L, RS5, and A6, so mid-range to top end.

All of the states in America require a periodic inspection so that people get a sticker for their plates to drive on for X number of years; in most states though, the 'inspection' doesn't really consist of much and people get by with parts duct taped on and so forth. If it's a more stringent state they will stick a sniffer in the tailpipe and make sure the car still has 4 tires. That's about it. So... to answer your question - yes, things are much different than in Europe, and no, many Americans do not take care of their cars the same way people in other countries do. Very few people do preventative maintenance. Also, mechanics in America tend to vary in honesty and they charge a lot for their work (like, $100/hr and then tons of hours by the book for a job that actually takes a fraction of that), so there's a lot of suspicion regarding that.

I've had my JSW TDi for a little over a year now. Everything has been great so far (since I use it mostly for weekend/long vacation road trips). Driving it around NYC has taken its toll... bent rims from epic potholes, scratched rims parallel parking on cobblestone streets, bumper dings from shitty parallel parkers, ect ect. I was lucky to find a tiny garage for cheap (well $150/month is wicked cheap for Williamsburg) so I survived this summer's window smashing/break-in epidemic.

For trips like NYC-Maine/NYC-Boston/NYC-Washington I can easily get 42-45mpg driving normally (70-85mph on the 65mph speed limit highways)... I've reached 50mpg driving like a total pussy (no higher than 70mph) so that extra 5mpg is never worth it. With two bikes on the roof rack the milage goes down drastically to the high 30's (mostly in the 35-38mpg range). When its just me on a bike trip I'll just put in inside the car. 99% city driving this summer with full blast A/C and lots of "my car is an air conditioned happy place" idling for 30min while my wife shopped in SoHo i've gotten as low as 25mpg. But usually 100% NYC driving is around 28-32mpg.

A lot of the times having a car in this city is fucking stupid. But if you can find cheap-ish parking having a car here is awesome. If I lived in the suburbs I'd probably have a nicer car, but it just doesn't make sense to street park a Audi S4 or a pristine Range Rover here - unless if you live in Park Slope - where you pretend not to care that your luxury sedan/suv/wagon is beat to shit from street parking/city driving.

I wish the US got more diesel options across the board....I want to buy american cars like a ford focus hatchback in diesel.
