Can anyone recommend me a decent radar detector? There are a lot of cops writing tickets in Texas and I'm amazed I haven't been caught yet.

I'm looking to spend maybe $300 tops? I don't know shit about radar detectors but I've seen some go as high as $600.. like, really? Are they really that good? How can something so simple cost so much money?

I researched them allot when I was 18 and got my first sports car... At the moment Valentine One was the best, I don't recall why at the moment. But something about it doing all frequencies and front/rear sensors.

Was zagato hired by BMW, I have always though that they just did cars and then hoped someone would go hey, I want a custom Enzo, why don't I pay you 1million $ to make one.

I hope BMW will make a new m coupe the old ones are great.

I don't know about the US but here in Europe i've been using Speed Trap apps for some times and didn't get a single ticket in a couple of years. It's those apps where people signal a "danger" (they are not allowed to say it's cops so they just call it danger), then when you pass by that zone, you either confirm or infirm. Since there's always between 10 and 1000 people on the same road with that app, there's very little chance you'll be the first one to see the cops and get caught.

Works for me as well, as detectors are forbidden here (380 euro fine, dont ask me how I know). And as an FYI, the police has radardetector-detectors these days.

You probably don't want to hear this, but it's a lot cheaper to just stop excessively speeding. I never understood the point in speeding just to speed, nor did I understand who these people are that seem to be late in perpetuity, requiring them to be in such a hurry every time they leave their home.

There are different types of speeding, and I don't think the poster you're relying to is talking about the type of driving you're talking about. There's a difference between high-speed driving and the sort of harried speeding you're talking about, which I agree tend to result in reckless, risky behavior as someone tries to "make up" time on the road.

As for the former type: despite years of driving fast cars, the only speeding ticket I've gotten this century was for doing 48 in a 45 about ten years ago, and that was more a DWB w/Porsche than a speeding ticket. The trick is to restrict high speed driving to conditions that are conducive to high speed driving - low traffic volume, away from urban areas with lots of exits and on-ramps and idiots, good sight lines and visibility. The most unsafe thing about high speed driving is speed differential - traffic moving half your speed or less, and so those sort of areas tend to be more heavily policed. Roads where you can safely drive at high speeds also aren't worth the manpower to park an officer for eight hours hoping to catch one person a day. Learn such roads in your area and you won't need gadgets.

The only time I really need gadgets is when I drive at night on 4 lanes highways and don't want to fall asleep at 130km/h. It makes me more alert, I get there quicker and I don't spend more gas because I stay constantly at the same speed and the engine's efficiency is higher than at 130km/h.

During the day especially on ighways I would rather use the limiter at 138km/h and chill but I tend to think I am a lot more in danger with people around and with my attention to the landscape and the music I'm listening to ease the boredom. I am also spending more gas because I have to pass people or reduce speed if there is traffic.

But obviously some people use those gadgets to speed in highly populated area or around schools, or on dangerous roads... Those people are always going to be there unfortunately. I could never defend those kind of behaviours. But I am not saying I am in the right on nightly speeding either.

i use the Escort - 9500ix, but i am going to switch over to the 9500ci as soon as i can find a decent installer in South Florida that knows how to work on my cars. they work really, really well - as long as there is line of sight it's picked up radar from about 1.5 - 2 miles away. it also has GPS and the software can be updated by Escort with maps of known speed traps and red light cameras.

the other option i considered was V1, whose main advantage is those arrows that tell you which direction the radar is coming from.

the 9500ci is the best for me because i want a stealth install, and it also has laser shifters (although i hear you need to upgrade those because they're not so good), but it's quite a bit more than $300. for that price i would try to pick up a used 9500ix or V1.

I used radar detectors for years where I could; they were illegal in Virginia where I grew up. However, after failed warnings or warnings too late, I decided to do without one and slow down instead. I'm now less prone to speed more than 10 mph over the limit, but I do sometimes get concerned about still getting a ticket within the 10 mph over the limit range.

I saw that, I like the color. I'm not so cracked up on the 991 after having seen a few on the roads now, it looks obese. Also not so cracked up on the retro stuff like the RS ducktails and gigantic-sized Fuchs that Porsche has been using lately.
I've found a similar green colored facelift Qporte 4.2 on the used car listings that I'm interested in now, it's going for like 30-40% less than what the white or black ones go for... because it's green, that is like a resale death sentence in Japan. Everything I've seen that is dark green sells at like 30-40% less than the black/white versions, I've seen an E63, a CLS63, and a 996 C4S all dirt cheap because they were forest green. I think it has some of the GT S stuff on it like the grilles and the wheels, everything except for the blacked headlights, so it's invisibly modified. Still, it's selling from the official Mas/Ferrari dealer, so it's a legit car. I have a busy month but once I get back from NY I might be able to talk to my accountant and see about getting it as a company car. Otherwise I'm back to looking at E63T's...
