I'll be going to Italy in late June, and spending a portion of the time in Sorrento.

I'll be wanting to make a day trip to the Amalfi Coast/Positano, was wondering if it would be a good idea to rent a car and drive myself? I heard the drive there is spectacular but frantic with narrow streets, low railings, steep drops, bumper to bumper traffic and crazy italian drivers.

For what it's worth, I've driven the road multitudes of times in Forza Motorsport biggrin.gif

I like mine! It's a little hard to live with at times, but fun. You do have to like the extreme fastback thing though.

the Ferrari FF is cool for the tech

its front diff (actually a 2 speed gearbox) is on the front of the engine, and is used for gears 1, 2, 3, 4, but only has 2 ratios, the first for 1st and 2nd, and the second for 3rd and 4th, each diff gear ratio has enough slip to cover 2 tranny gear ratios

5th and up is rear wheel drive only...

 

great idea, keeps the engine behind the front axle centerline

Rent and drive yourself and dont worry too much. Odds are that there's enough traffic to torpedo any "racing" aspirations.
Other than that, Italy is very hectic to drive, but things have a way of not hitting each other somehow. I always find the "flocks of scooters" an interesting phenomenon when visiting.

Northern Italy isn't bad, it's bumper to bumper and people drive fast, but oddly enough the cars aren't scratched and banged up like they are in France and further south.

try to get a smart convertible. they are fun to drive and it's almost a bike feeling. enjoy your trip.
