Saw a 01 540i Sport at a small dealership today. Pulled in for a test drive. It had some nice Dinan bits on it. Exhaust sounded incredible and everything on it was really clean. Not sure what all maintenance it had done to it. He showed me an $800 receipt for basically having all the seals and gaskets changed in the car. Just driving that makes me want an E39 more than before. Think I would be smarter to go with something like the 528i or 530i. Probably less on the pocketbook for maintenance.

Edit: and it was like the slate blue, which was incredible. Can't find the exact color name

steel blue? that was a pretty rare color, i think

This looks slightly darker than the car I looked at today, but I guess it is steel blue.

Just bought this today as a third car..

540i's are pretty reliable, I wouldn't get the 6 cylinder E39 if it's just worries about maintenance costs. The difference there would be be miniscule and dependent on your luck with any used car, but the difference in pulling power between the 6 and the V8 is night and day.

Also the bottom second E39 picture you posted was actually an M5. Me Gusta, especially if it's in Sterling Gray.

When I was shopping for cars last year, I really wanted to get a 2003 540 sport. Beautiful cars, fantastic performance, practical, etc etc etc. I eventually decided against it due to reading in reviews/ratings and in nearly every forum I checked that the 540 could wreck you due to maintenance issues. The impression I got was that the car was not exactly dependable, even by German standards. Take that for what it's worth--I've never owned one.

My sister on the other hand used to drive an old E34 540, and you could depend on it every week to be an absolute shit pile. We once had to pull over on the way to school because, literally, a small fire hard started in the engine bay.

e39 540s issues are t-stat, water pump, radiator, hoses, expansion tanks, ball joints, bushings, cup holders (seriously), window regulators you'd have to change on a regular basis

The radiator/cooling system issues were enough to break the deal for me. I just didn't think I could afford to keep one running. And coming from a previous Mercedes I'm prepared to replace a few window regulators here and there.

Still an absolutely phenomenal vehicle though. One of my favorite sedans of any era period. The interior is classic as well.

Don't forget the instrument cluster LCD and MID display.
