If I wouldn't need at least three seats, the Lotus Elise or Alfa 4C (maybe the Wiesmanns) would be "my" car. I like the combination of a capable sports car in a simple package.

You're right. There are scenic roads in those areas of the lake that are unique. Many of those roads have been seen in many movies. But you can not go fast. In those areas there should be a nice convertible, is not it?
I can only imagine how much fun this would be. The road from the lake to Alpe di Garda and from Torbole to Forte Belvedere are probably the most beautiful roads I've ever drove. Even in a somewhat sedate BMW X3.

Does anyone have any experience shipping / transporting cars for a move?

I'm looking to ship my car from Texas to Massachusetts and the quotes I'm getting are in the $850 ballpark and wondering if that's standard or pretty competitive.

These would be for open containers.

I'm wondering if it'd be a bad idea to just drive the car instead. Gas would be cheaper, though I'd be adding 1700 miles to my odometer, affecting resale value, and driving for several days kinda sounds ******.

my brother moved a car from NY to LA, but I forget the cost. Doubt it was above the 800 mark. I'll ask when he wakes up.

That is pretty reasonable. I usually pay $1k to $1.2k to ship one of my classics up to Pebble/ Monterey from LA. And that's with a special handler for classic cars and, of course, enclosed.

I had cars shipped to me from the East Coast for $1.5k. Again, enclosed.

So 850 is pretty much standard. You might get a tad cheaper for open if you shop around.

I doubt that adding 1.7k miles will affect any resale value whatsoever on a modern car unless you plan on leaving a very precious/ rare car within break in miles (e.g. under 1k miles).

Driving an E60 M5 1,700 miles to sell it would result in the most stressful, most agonizing 1,700 drive of your life. Pay the $850 for the peace of mind.

Was thinking the same thing since he has had some minor accidents that have been way more than $850.

$850 is cheap - I'm thinking pricing more in line with mbaum's post

I'm not driving it to sell it. I'm moving to Mass for a job change :satisfied:.

My family has shipped a bunch of cars and have had 2 damaged cars. One was enclosed and another was open. The enclosed car had a deep scratch put in that was the length of the hood and the fin on the roof broken (~$1500 in damages). The other one ran through a tree and scratched the entire car (~$15000 in damages).

One thing to know is that they're very shady. They try to load up as many cars as they can, so they will make up stories about why the shipment is delayed. Don't expect an accurate pickup or delivery date.

Not true: While no name/ low cost guys can indeed be a bit questionable, there are very reputable carriers out there who are dilligent and, should something happen, cover it. Check their insurance policy before you hire them. Check out references, online ratings, etc. However, those are usually 20 - 30% more expensive. But with everything in life, you get what you pay for. I gladly pay for peace of mind!

No, they both covered the damages... but their timing issues are sketchy.

The neurotic side of me worries that my car could get scratched / damaged during transit, which would be a PITA and infuriating. The quote I got for enclosed transport was $1650.. ridiculous. At that rate, I'd rather drive it myself and make a mini-roadtrip out of it (trying to put a positive spin on having to drive for 23 hours).
