And modern turbos do not have "imperceptible lag". It's a split second now vs a couple of seconds, but it's still there. And still sucks. fight[1].gif

I do stand by what I said about modern turbos. I'm also talking at the M3/4 level and above and I'm not talking about the hybrid hypercars - which I've never driven, but this is the internet, right?

Tried starting up a hill in third again by mistake today. Atleast this time I figured it out before actually getting going and didn't get that shitty clutch smell.


Seriously though, when you're starting after a stop especially on a hill, how do you do it?
I was told to let out the clutch a little bit with my foot still on the brake till I felt it start to let out (car idle changes, miata shakes a tiny bit, but you can tell the clutch is almost out), and then move my foot to the accelerator and start giving it gas while letting off the last bit of the clutch to get going. Is that wrong? I've read online that people are taught to use the handbrake at the start but I'm not sure how I'd let that out unless I just left it locked in mildly and disengaged once I was in first.

I should really just go sit on a hill and practice till I get it down. I always start off a bit ugly before re-finding the spot.

First off, proud of you for coming along quickly with the new car.

I'd never use the parking brake. I think you'll eventually only have to get partially off the clutch and on the throttle a bit. It'll sorta feel like creep on a torque converter automatic at some point.

Hills are a bitch starting out. Just make sure to not practice with a car behind you. smile.gif

Haha thanks. I guess it's just practice to make it smoother. I've already driven like 500 miles, but maybe like 5% of that has been spent going into 1st from a start. I have a pretty good instinct of slamming on the brake if I start to roll back at all if I stall. It freaks my girlfriend out the couple of times it's happened because she never experienced stalling before this. Soooo yeah. Gotta fix that up soon haha.

 

I definitely notice a huge difference in smoothness when I feed the clutch a bit vs forgetting that the grab zone is really late and letting off too early to get on the gas. That jalopy lurch feel tho.

The parking brake helps for a beginner on hills. That roll back when you take your foot off the brake tends to induce panic and you fuck up the N-1 shift. If the parking brake is engaged it won't roll back...and then once you feel the gear engaging you can start to disengage the handbrake. Doesn't work obviously for these stupid ass modern cars with the electronically actuated parking brake

So I can just put the parking brake up just a click or two to stop or slow the roll back?

The economic crunch in the late 90's, which led to more and more "kei" cars gaining market share has subsided. Only the Auto companies are late to the party. For the average consumer. I believe the enthusiasm is still there.
However, the "Hero Car" generation has grown up. And tuners as we know them are at least 30. With the bulk of the tuners in their late 30's /early 40's.
Oddly, the car culture is perhaps 20% made up of female enthusiasts. With some of the baddest cars i have seen being long term daily's of lady drivers.
Every morning i see an attractive lady in her early 40's driving an R33 Gtr, white on gold BBS LM's. And used to see another in a 'Caged Honda Civic typeR. That was all business. Tuning is non Gender specific here.
But for the guys? We tend to change cars more often. And good choices are drying up. To the average value on a Z32 300zx is 6k. And that's for an Auto. My own car gets looks like people seen a ghost.

The "tuner generation" has grown up. Has money. And there is nothing new in the showrooms.
The car companies are bleeding money. While consumers look to the past for that thrill only a compact, high powered, and nimble car with that squeaky noise you can't pinpoint can give.

The values are going up. Almost at a usdm muscle car rate.

While the next generation? Can't afford to start in a classic. And no offerings in the showrooms for them to finance with their first decent paying job. Shame.
They now resort to "tuning" shoeboxes. Stancing them, and putting cute stickers on them. With street cred equal to the number of air fresheners in your front window.

Hope is not lost. The children of our generation grew up in the classics. Nostalgia reigns supreme. They might get the "hand me downs" but they will keep it alive. I saw a dude maybe 20, rolling an old school 86. Rusted, beat up. But he was loving it. Made me smile.

Japanese car companies may be just working this out, But some exciting stuff is in the works. Trust me.

Half tempted to buy another project. Just to give my current car to my son when he is 20. And my car is $$$$$$$$. . Keep the flame burning. Tuners still exist.

It's seriously one of the things that annoys me about them. Not that I'm a drifter or anything. But it's more cumbersome to use
