And what if i told you, you could walk into a car lot. And buy a mid engined, rear wheel drive,Turbo'd Honda? lurker[1].gif

Yeah, I think I can swing some of that stuff. The issue is that there are so many options for aftermarket headers and exhausts. A lot of the bigger name ones are very pricey. I'm going to have to start watching out for used stuff. The issue is that the cheaper stuff often makes no difference to performance, so it's hard to find the cheaper used stuff that actually works and isn't just the same thing as setting your own money on fire lol.

In a car of this things age, might be worth looking at plugs etc as well. Or can just wait to do that till the turbo decision comes up since that requires different plugs...

What car are you referring to? I thought you were going to say del sol, but that's a fwd.

Also, you should be more clear when you state your preference for certain cars. I know what you're trying to say, but it really be interpreted as bashing.

It means i have had a variety of Euro cars up on a lift. As a service technician in a European used car dealership/garage.

If a european car is Carburetted? I am totally into it. icon_gu_b_slayer[1].gif - that includes Porsches and most def Fiats.

Pre 1990 Euro's float my boat. (Renault 4GTL, Renault 5, Alfa's, the big Benz's, the Bmw 2002's, and the list goes on . . . )
just when we are talking 1990's and up to 2001? Japan brought their A-game. You can't deny the slew of amazing cars to come out in that period. Less of a choice these days. So the value is going up on the good ones.

LS400?You mean the Toyota Celsior Ucf20/30? Standing next to one now. . Perhaps one of the cheapest cars to own and maintain available. Far superior to a Camry. In all aspects. And can be had for under 3k all day long. Lexus LS400 is the ultimate budget buy.

So, you have friends who buy expensive cars. Congrats. But i make plenty enough money to do the same.
-Especially at auction price, with no repair labour costs. wink.gif
My preferences are not based on price or income.
Sure, you paid more for you car, it must be better. Right? You are more than entitled to take that position.

Soon i will do the same. For the wife. She want's a new mini.(40 effing K???) So she can have a new mini. Meh. facepalm.gif

So you had some subies?

The wife and i both currently run Subies both turbo. My Gc8, and a 2001 GTB Twin turbo wagon. They have both been good to us. A bit fiddly at times to work on. But perfect daily's in winter.

I am entitled to my opinion on eurocars. Because it is an informed opinion. Feel free to throw money away and feel "premium". Imma keep it grass roots. nod[1].gif

As for my car? And the odd bit of fun seeing if it can keep up? I now have 5k in it. Plus about 8k in labour time. (Zero) and while it could be a lot better? It's hanging in there just fine. Was meant to be a daily while i build other cars. . . But we all know how that goes. lol8[1].gif

There are definitely European cars that aren't well built or are costly to own, but that doesn't apply to all of them, and that can be said of some Japanese cars too (hell, my first Subaru made it into Consumer Reports for being a lousy year to buy one with various problems).  So pretending all Japanese cars are great and calling all European cars "Eurotrash" is ridiculous especially, when Porsche is ranked number one in terms of reliability and quality, ahead of anything from Japan.

In the 90's Japan did send some nice cars to our shores, the NSX, the 1995 Supra Turbo, and the 1st gen Lexus LS400.  I like some of the vintage Japanese cars the 240Z (even the 280ZX ...although sort of a bloated version, it was a cool car when I was a kid), the first gen RX7, and the Toyota 2000GT.

Actually, My reference to Lexus should have said LS460 and GTR.  They are current cars that are both at the top of the Japanese car food chain, and the parts and labor on 75K-100K+ cars are definitely going to exceed that of Camrys and Corollas.  So my point was, someone spending $75K-100K or more has to expect that parts, labor and repairs will cost more than on cars that start in the 30K or less category (be it Japanese or European).  Can't we expect if one purchases a GTR the cost of brake pads and rotors are far more than that for a Camry?

My point about having friends who daily drive Porsches and BMWs had nothing to do with saying I have friends with expensive cars.   It was that I've known guys for years that used their Euro cars as daily drivers and they had no major problems, but lucky me I had more repairs and issues with my daily driver Subies (particularly our first Legacy) than they had.

Yes, we are on our second Subaru.  I've driven BRZs, WRXs, and they are fine cars.  My first Legacy sucked, and had all sorts of issues especially by the time I got rid of it (all sorts of stuff was going and it needed about $4K in repairs.  The main reason we bought another was it was the least expensive car we could find with AWD (the Mrs doesn't like SUVs), and we needed something that won't attract vandals, thieves, jerks, etc when its parked at work.  One guy I work with had his Acura TL broken into for change near the console.

My opinion has nothing to do with the idea that someone paid more for a car so it must be better.  I never said that or anything close to it.

You can certainly have your opinion, but mine has nothing to do with as you said, spending more to "Feel Premium." I have the cars I have because they are fun to drive, not for a "Premium feel."  You have lumped lots of cars into your criticisms/Eurotrash description, but when was the last time you actually drove a modern Porsche or high performance European cars?  Perhaps your contempt for Euro cars has jaded your ability get past where a car is from, what the cost of parts will be, and to simply have fun.

I've driven various Subies, and some are fun...but I've driven other cars that were a more fun.  Not every car that was more fun to drive, is something I'd want to own (Lotus Elise), but having fun does have a value.  Maybe you and I just view what is fun differently.

Looks something in between a Jag and an Aston that is melting.

This is fun:

Re: subies.

The early 2000's were bad man... My damn car looked/checked out fine when I got it, but in the first year of used car ownership it needed a head gasket, right rear wheel bearing (left is on its way out), alternator, radiator, and a few other things. Yeah it's a 2002 with 144k miles on it now, but that head gasket thing sucked and was a known issue that they should have done a much better job of addressing. It's a damn shame they didn't fix it for that long.

But when it's working, it's working so well that I don't really want to deal with the headache of playing used daily driver roulette. Hilariously, even though the miata is a car for fun, I plan on driving it around for everything but the winter months. It'll take a solid load off the subaru and probably make car ownership cheaper all around!

Good.  HRoi blew his load and MBaire is mid lease and boring at this point.  We need the styleforvm elite to pick up the slack here.
