Base GTI is 24k. You can probably walk out with that price including taxes tags and fees after haggling, depending on location.

I got my 2012 base GTI for $22.5K OTD in July 2011. A VW Golf can hold a ton of stuff though it is small in size. We have hauled lumber, trees, dogs, presents, and a bunch of other crap my girlfriend feels we need to haul and it does it all. I was looking for a TDI but decided I wanted a little pep though I rarely use it.

I think since the OP wants to keep it under $22k, a JETTA would be a better option. Roomier, more options for the price etc etc... I think the new VW look is rather dull but they drive very well and are dependable. For around $22k it's fairly loaded. Base at $16k is a bargain.

The Jetta Sportwagen starts under $22k.

Base 2-door is $24,200... there are a few trim levels. The "Autobahn" version starts at just under $31k. The Golf R starts at $34k

I've owned 3 Jettas and while nice I just can't get around the non-independent rear suspension. My neighbor had a Mk4 and now a Mk5 and hates it. The VR6 does make a magnificent noise and I'm guessing the turbo models with the chip mod are fun.

I hear you but would wager 99% of the public doesn't know what that is/means/does... If the OP is an enthusiast, so be it but otherwise it's a fair amount of car for the caysh coming from a Sentra.

That said, if being frugal, hard to be a new Sonata with that 100k promise.

He confirmed he has the autobahn version, its 2 yrs old. Its a nice ride, I cant comment on the base version.

I had a Jetta wagon more than a decade ago, I got it in the sport trim, it was a very nice car for the money. It was a diesel, which was a great engine.

This brought back a memory. When Hyundai was just introduced to the US, it was akin to a Yugo and you'd be made fun of at school if your parents drove one. My father was considering one and I went crazy in the dealership: the man was about to ruin my life. Luckily he passed, that sales guy would have murdered me given the chance.

Unfortunately, that bad memory sticks with me so I'm not able to consider the possibility of one. I'm sure they've gotten better but I'm scarred for life. It was this shitbird, the Excel at $4990:

A guy I grew up with had a non-hatchback one of these in burgundy. Since he was the first one with a driver's license I spent a lot of time running around the streets of NYC in that "mini Jetta" as we called it. Was great as a 19 year old's second car but not so great as the family car. But it was leagues better than a Yugo in terms of quality as well as power. Hyundai has come a long way now tho and are on Japanese levels in terms of quality control.

Well, he said he'd go higher if he was blown away by something. No clue what that entails but I think an extra $2k over budget is worth it. $31k is kinda crazy for a GTI... at that point I'd just get the R.

There are a TON of other cars I'd rather get in the $31k range before thinking about the GTI...jeez. I'm throwing in pre-owned cars too.
