I wouldn't worry about the stigma for two reasons:

1. The E-wagon had the highest income demographic for Mercedes for a long time - rich guys were buying them for their wives, this still may be true. Which leads into:

2. That sort of concern is for the middle class anyway.

Anyway, buy her a Cayenne.

We do not buy vehicles. When the warranty is done, the vehicle is done. And sorry but we both find Cayennes fugly. And I'm a lower. Middle class was rich people to me growing up.

If you are buying Mercedes I don't see how you are lower class. What about the Ford Explorer? It has a very nice interior and drive despite the lack of luxury badge.

Piob is of the nouveau riche. His suit trousers are bedazzled and he always makes sure to get the flashy spinner rims for the wife.

The non-AMG E wagon is pretty much the height of good taste amongst new vehicles you can buy in America. The Range Rover Evoque is the polar opposite of that - a year from now it's probably going to be the #1 choice of vehicle amongst privileged ethnic students with overly spiky hair and Ed Hardy'ish clothes who are the default drivers for harems of skinny girls going bar hopping/drunk driving. It's perfect for that, actually.

Actually, I can see it now - those people are already trading in their 328i sedans with carbon fiber roundels for Evoques already. The traffic stops and being bent over the hood, being patted down for drugs - that's for later.

You're not wrong.

A friend of mine from uni. He is one of triplets and they were each given an evoque last year. The guy is the epitome of spoiled brattery, and I'm convinced that he has been/will be on that Rich Kids of Instagram website. On the other hand he's a nice enough guy and throws the most mental house parties I've ever been to.

Saw a new 3 series wagon tonight, first time I've seen one. It had the M sport pack on it too. Very decent looking little wagon. This was at the same time a current 5er M sport wagon and an Alfa 159 wagon rolled by. Once again, do not understand why crossovers exist, when far more elegant and higher performing solutions exist. The idea that a crossover can handle off-roading is fooling oneself, as well.

All the old-money people here drive Camry's or 20 year-old Mercs. Worrying about your car brand is a middle-class affectation.

Aren't you in NYC? The rich people here seem to be chauffeured, often in a black SUV or S-Class.

Actually that pretty much matches what I expect as well, but it isn't like they go out and buy old Mercs, they have just had them that long

Basically the point is that they don't care what other people think because they have nothing to prove.

The Evoque hate is just making me want to nudge into picking that.

Just saw an RRS lease for a reasonable price but only had 12k miles per year. We need 15k but now I'm going to try and make a deal on that for her come the summer.

the rich UES NYC'ers will still have an old merc parked in a garage somewhere for when they actually need to drive somewhere. sometimes it'll even be a late 80's/early 90's diesel merc just to be esoteric. the other 90% of the time they're in cabs/subways/buses/being chauffeured.

parkslope/UWS families will have a nice SUV/Station Wagon that has bumpers beat to **** and small side dents from street parking. a beat to **** late model Range Rover is an especially nonchalant way to show off on park slope.

Only known one real family with a Merc E wagon in all my life, despite being familiar with them; it was a brown super diesel W123 wagon while I was in grade school in the 80's. Their other car was a vintage Rolls Royce on cinder blocks with no hope of running by way of apathy, and they lived in a large victorian built by a retired pirate or something. It was interesting. The E-class, that is.
