Not surprised about the height either to be honest. The 1-series had a obnoxiously high glasshouse and that design trait seemed to carry over to the 2-series.

Then why not call it the 235i?

It's like an enhanced package on top of the standard 235i that is 'breathed upon' with M-tech parts but not a full M-car.

I'd think it's analogous to the ZHP package, except with a more obvious/recognizable name badge rather than just a package code on the dealer spec sheet.

Because tacking on the "M" probably makes paying $50k for an entry-model BMW a little more bearable.

My car has the "M sport package" but isn't an M and they don't have the M in the name. Or are you suggesting it's beyond the M Sport Package and much closer to actual M but not really? Either way, I find the name kind of silly. They should just pick one.

Lots of people would argue that this is exactly what the 1M is, as well

I'm not 100% sure but I believe they actually perform between a basic M-sport and a true M's (e.g. like the ZHP was), but I think it's moreso just a new naming convention where they can leverage the M-brand's recognition to charge more.

Like Audi's S-line.

I see you all are making idfnl feel welcome. Please continue. devil.gif

It's at least arguable. All the other M cars were full ground up designs. The 1M had a slight hp bump and uprated other bits over the donor 1-series. But we had this discussion already 50 pages ago stirpot.gif

Isn't the engine in the 1M the same engine in the 335i, just more aggressively tuned?
It's a N55 engine, the 1M had a N54.
Yeah that's what I thought.

Most "purists" would argue that a true M-car is supposed to have a bespoke engine built specifically for that model. It's a nit and I'm indifferent in that regard, but I do lie in the camp of disappointment with BMW moving away from that paradigm.

The M35 cars, are not M cars, they are just below that and are meant to compete with Audi S cars.

Either way 280+hp in a small hatchback isn't slow by any means, the N54's get 400hp with some tweaks.

3 pages of talk on M this and M that? These are the only M that matter ...

I was referring to the 1M.
