That was one of the best episodes of Top Gear ever.

Agreed - I had not realised the Spanish economy was so bad.

Got to do some test driving yesterday for some preliminary research. Drove a Q5 premium plus, a GLK350, and a ML350. The ML350 was definitely the nicest although more pricey. The audi is sportier but not as many features. Sales associate at the MB dealer was a lot nicer to deal with, too. Wouldn't be surprised if I end up in one soon.

How the hell did you miss that, it's been all over the news for over the last year, Portuguese is at the same level if not worse.

I can't remember if it was in one area or the entire country, but the last half of 2012 only one new production company / factory opened.

Did you see the program. Empty towns, bankrupt international airport for test track, ghost town for road race, road to nowhere. We have a place in Spain but as it is away from the worst problems some of this was a revelation to me.

I would have taken the McLaren tthough

Haven't seen it yet, but all of those have been on the news.

Edit:

Currently watching it, wouldn't it have made more sense, if James was driving a Jaguar XK RS or something, instead of a 4 year old Audi.

Don't forget that the cars they drive are largely determined by what the manufacturer wishes to give them. Jag might have decided not to pit their XK against the Ferrari and Mclaren in case it came off worse. It may be that Audi threw in a few hundred thousand quid for "expenses" in addition to the car.

It is also possible that they chose the cars because they liked them. Fairly sure that James owns a 458, and Clarkson replaced his Lamborghini with an R8. Might be misremembering that though.

Saw a G63 today in that pearly white colour. Awesome ride.

I have a 2012 with comand and it's horrendous with an ipod. My ipod is a POS (crashes all the time) which exacerbates things, but navigating through large playlists is extremely cumbersome and every time I go from one option to another it starts from the top. So for instance, if I scroll down 200 artists from the top and want to listen to a song and then go back to the artists menu, it starts from the top. Bluetooth integration with iphone works great. I don't use NAV. 2014 MBs are going to have a new and improved version of comand with mbrace2 that brings in apps including yelp and google local search so things might be better soon. http://www.mbusa.com/mercedes/mbrace/apps

Interesting factoid posted on Porsche's Facebook page today:

Did you know that over 70 percent of all Porsche vehicles ever built are still on the road today?

I don't believe that, at least half of the cars build before esp, are wrapped around trees around the world.

I suspect that fact is true for any high-end car maker. Expensive cars tend to be better maintained, when they go wrong they are likely to be repaired, and over the course of their life will generally be more pampered. Even when they get worn right down they will be sold on to people who want a beater-track-car instead of sold for scrap. Not to mention the fact that mass production (in the tens of thousands of cars per year range) has only been available recently, and well within a cars lifespan. See if they can still claim that after churning out 100,000 cars a year for 100 years.

I would venture that the likes of Rolls Royce and Bentley could probably claim number into the 80's or 90's.

Honestly, I'd imagine mass production increases reliability in something like a car. But yes, I buy the rest of your point smile.gif
