Careers where you travel abroad.

Is this basically what the peace corps. is? Does anyone have any experience with this? I realize it's a volunteer no money thing, I'm trying to become less materialistic anyway.

I hate having a set schedule of things in my life and I want to travel and see the world, but I have no idea on how to do that. I've also given the US army consideration. Advice?

From secondhand knowledge, Peace corp is tough to get into. You could try teaching English in another country. I saw on House Hunters a lady in the UAE teaching English...she was looking at high-rise condos for like $6000 a month that were going to be paid for by the school. Props to being less materialistic even if you're stuck here in the US. Just saw this, but look up the movie trailer for "180* South". It's about a couple guys who said f*ck it and moved to Patagonia to have adventures.

From what I've seen on documentary television, life in the peace corps is dirty, smelly, and unsatisfying. Although they always promise lots of hot hippie chicks in the program, it's invariably ugly unsociable men signing up for these programs. As you don't get paid for the program it's also difficult to get on with the local savage women. All in all it seems to be a lose-lose proposition.

I recommend finding a mid-forties widow with a large inheritance. Provide her with oral treats and in exchange she can finance your worldwide extravaganza.

Or you know, you could get an effin' job and pay your own way instead of looking for others to do so for you.

Edited the title for different answers. I've also thought about teaching English, I'd probably go to Asia for that.

Somewhat ironic that you are posting your desire to be less materialistic on a forum devoted to high end clothes.

The Foreign Service is doing lots of hiring and it is supposedly easier to get into than previously. If I were you, I would choose a country where you want to learn the language and the experience may help you down the road. Asia, Middle East, etc. Military experience can open up doors, but you obviously want to carefully consider the potential risks these days and it may not be worth it to you.

You could come work for the airlines and have your dreams crushed like the rest of us, but damn is it fun.

You could be a cook. You will never make enough money to be materialistic, and if you're talented you can go wherever the fuck you want and will be a precious commodity.
Although you'll have to quit working in good food quickly.

-Business (all those investors in international banks)

-Law - alot of organizations to work for with certain types of law

-Major in something like international aid - they'll send you to disaster areas and the like

-Ecpat - working in Thailand, for example, with issues concerning the trafficking of children (intern positions or paid positions)

-journalism is an obvious choice

-TESL

-car salesman - I knew a guy who worked for Mercedes (not some high level exec) who went from Germany to Hong Kong, Japan, and then Taiwan, spending a few years in each country outside Germany.

-International hotel management (the Intercontinentals, Hiltons, Conrads, Pan Pacifics, etc.)

There are alot of options. Obviously they are not easy. TESL is probably the easiest, and will give you travel and money while thinking of something more long-term and probably a hell of alot funner.

Just choose a lucrative career and take a lot of vacations, simple as that.

Why would you want to fuse work with travel? Most traveling businessmen tire of it... I'm sure there's careers out there with all-paid travel, plane, hotels, meals, etc as part of the description, but chances are a lot of other people want the job and you'll have to climb up some horrible corporate ladder to get there. I was admitted to the bar in the US and already have a job, but one thing I was thinking of was getting admitted in New South Wales just for fun (American JDs meet most of their reqs, and there's no exam), and see where it might lead.

Peace Corp seems like a bad idea... mostly for rich kids trying to perfect their resumes. I read a study somewhere that the two years they put in at a certain location, holistically considering all the expenses they incur, comes out to the equivalent of roughly a mere $5000 donation. If you really wanna help the world, make a lot of money and just donate that amount, they don't need some suburban 20-something laborer in Cambodia. Army is even worse, they don't even let JAGs decide where they can be posted.

These generally seem to be mutually exclusive though.

Work on a transport ship as a deckhand. Trade your labor for some beans and rice, a cot, and a free ride to the next port of call.

Or just make enough money to fly someplace in style, of course.
