So it turns out I may be transferring and attending school in Newark (off of Raymond, close to Prudential Center, about 2 blocks from NE Corridor Line Newark stop on the PATH) starting this August.
In short, my folks live an hour and a half or more away & the commute would be murder as I'm likely to have 8am classes several days/week. I know I can't be too picky over a couple hundred bucks but I'd rather not live under a drug dealer and above a prostitute nor can I see myself paying more than 1,300 or 1,400/month at most. Am I being unrealistic?
Most likely, COI will be paid by loans. In a sense, I'm paying for them myself and the only question is now or in a few years.
I've heard Newark is horrid but the areas around school (Seton Hall Law) aren't half bad?
I've heard Hoboken is close and has +100 on anything and everything Newark, lots of young profs, plus plenty of hot girls around and about on the bar scene.
I've heard Jersey City is a miniature NYC, only slightly cheaper, and a lot of variables.
I've heard NYC is <20 minutes away on the train, but rent there is from what I understand, ridiculous.
Any places or neighborhoods nearby I'm completely missing?
If it helps, I'd also be looking for a part time/summer job in Manhatten.
Any help from my NY/NJ brethren would be huge as I am sort of desperate for honest and helpful info at this point. My contacts in the area are almost non-existent.
