GymSoap Review

Long-time lurker, and I finally decided to jump in. Anyway, I just got this new soap in the mail and tried it out, and I thought someone might be interested.

GymSoap is (obviously) created for gym rats, and claims to be "99.9% effective at eliminating germs, bacteria, fungus, and viruses." Beyond the marketing hype, the active ingredient is triclosan (Wikipedia), which you may be somewhat familiar with. It also contains tea tree oil (again, Wikipedia), which is something to be aware of, as a small percentage of the population can be sensitive to it.

Anyway, on to the (short) review:

The first thing you'll probably notice is the tag-line on the bottle, "Embrace good hygiene", which is kind of off-putting, as it seems to suggest that hygiene wasn't something that you were into until you bought it. It's also hard as hell to read the writing on the bottle, which has small gray text on a clear label, but all of the ingredients and marketing junk are listed on the website, and I somehow doubt you need instructions on how to use soap.

Lather is nothing to get worked up about. I generally hate the smell of fragrances in soaps, but this is light and not at all unpleasant. Even if you hose yourself down with it, the smell is barely noticeable after rinsing unless you put your skin right up to your nose and inhale. It probably wouldn't clash with most fragrances.

I've got a slight feeling of dryness in my skin after using this, but it's nothing terrible. I might try following up with a moisturizer of some sort.

So...

Upsides: smells good, generally pleasant soap. Unsure if it works yet, though. I basically bought this because I have tinea and I'm trying like hell to get rid of it, but I haven't had much luck so far. First use today, and I'll let you know in a month if it's helped.

Downsides: it's pretty expensive, for a body wash. It costs $11.99 per bottle. Basically, I wouldn't bother unless you have you have athlete's foot or some other issue you need to get rid of. Maybe consider buying it if you shower at the gym and you're worried about catching something.

Anyone else tried it? Has it worked for you?

tea tree oil will give teenagers man boobs, and antibacterial products are unnecessary and stupid (promotes resistant bacteria). no thanks. germ freaks should stay home.

Luckily, I'm far past puberty. However, that is something to keep in mind, and this probably isn't the soap you want for your kids.

There's conflicting evidence as to whether triclosan promotes bacterial resistance. However, I agree that any antibacterial soap should be used only as necessary.

dude if you have tinea get some antifungal cream from your doctor, or it might even be available without prescription from the pharmacy.

I've been using some kind of cream for a while, but it just isn't working. It goes away and comes back when I stop using it, so I needed something to nuke this out of existence.

Dear Spammer,

drown yourself in a pool of antibacterial soap.

Hugs and kisses,

Harvey.

Wouldn't a regular bar of soap work just as well?

No. Tinea's a huge pain in the ass to get rid of, apparently, which I didn't know until now.

soap with a bit of general antibacterial/antifungal shit won't nuke it out of existence.

Use the fungal cream everyday for like a week, and make sure you clean your shower, your bathmat, your shoes and change your sheets.

also make sure noone else is using your shower who might be reinfecting you.
