Malta recommendations?

I'm visiting the island of Malta next month for a conference and have an extra day or two or sight-see.

Anyone got recommendations: sights, food, drink, whatever?

If you have a whole 1~2 days, maybe renting a car is a good idea. You can drive around and see the whole island in a day.

I imagine you are staying at the Hilton or Westin? There is cheap pizza place called "Ronka" nearby, which is pretty good (but stick to pizza or pasta). Restaurants and businesses close for an afternoon break, so it's good to have a place like Ronka that stays open all day and night.

For dinner, maybe try some of the restaurants that serve good seafood, as there are a lot of fishing villages on the island. Otherwise, I don't know if you want to waste your time in a greek restaurant while in Malta, but there is one really good one called "Bouzouki" in St. Julians (walking distance from Hilton, Westin, etc.). The bread and lamb shank is good. Avoid the touristy restaurants like Paparrazi, which are just expensive with mediocre quality.

There is really not much to do, but just soaking up the atmosphere of the historic sites, and crazy people. That's why I recommend driving, so you can say you experienced trading paint with the worst drivers in the world

I became intrigued by Malta after this thread was started and found this article on the
Rotunda of Mosta Bomb Miracle

I think the more sensible explanation is more amazing.

Thanks, Dragon-- I'm actually staying in Valletta, in a nice hotel a little bit away from the Hilton. I'll look into renting a car, although driving on the left might freak me out

Driving on the left is the least of your worries

If you are staying in Valletta, you might want to consider public transportation. Valletta is the main bus terminal, so all the routes go through Valletta anyway. The retro buses are part of the charm of Malta as well. For example, instead of walking around the Valletta hotel to find a bar at night, take the bus to Paceville and check out the night life, which is interesting it's own way.

As a world heritage site, there are a couple of attractions you can see in the Valletta area (all walking distance), but don't confine yourself to that area.
