Bangkok - turmoil and movement - travel help

One of my colleagues (not that well traveled or adventurous) has to go to Bangkok to visit the Taiwanese embassy, get a visa and then fly to Taiwan.

Can someone with knowledge of current situation shed some light if this is likely to be problematic.

99.9% of all crisis ridden areas reported by news outlets are so far off the mark it's laughable.

On the other hand, major hotel brands have closed their doors:

Again, however, you look at alot of the comments to these stories and they claim bullshit to the exagerated coverage:

In my experience travelling around some what are identified as dangerpous places - it's usually all good. If I wasn't occupied where I am, I'd be in Bangkok tomorrow.

I've grown up at a time when martial law, political stand-offs, coup d'etat, armed rebellions, etc... was the norm. My advise: - absolutely avoid places where the redshirts are congregated - don't use mass transit, take a cab - always bring along a map - always have an identification card that shows your friend as a visitor in thailand - do not hang around hotel lobbies
