Need a Fit Critique

Before critiquing, please read... This is the first time I post any pic of myself on this forum. What I'm wearing in the pic is pretty basic and admittedly pretty average for folks around my office. I'm looking to step up my game and realize I need clothes of better quality and fit. I figure suggestions would be somewhat vague without setting a baseline, so I'm posting what I happen to be wearing today. I'm 5'9" and weigh 160 lbs. The shirt is a button-down Polo (size M), the jeans Old Navy boot cut (33x32). Belt and shoes are black, although that may not be obvious from the poor-quality iPhone picture. What I'm looking for are specific suggestions, not just "Burn it all!" (although I can appreciate that sentiment). Here are the problems I already see with this outfit:
  • The jeans are at least one waist size too big for me, which explains why I tightened the belt so much.
  • There's quite a bit of extra fabric in the shirt, so it's blousing in an unflattering way.
  • The shoes are square-toed.
What other problems can you point out, and what solutions can you offer to get me headed in the right direction? (As an aside, based on my profile, would you say I have sloped shoulders?) Thanks in advance for any constructive criticism. I'm here to learn.

Certainly, I'll be ditching everything in this picture (with the possible exception of the belt and socks).

Well, in that case: There is no real advice anyone can give you except "pay attention to fit". Look through WAYWT and see what you like and what you don't like. Then, go and try as much on as you can.

Can you offer something more specific in the way of what would be considered better fit, or did I pretty much touch on all the issues in my OP? I'm just wondering if there's more I'm missing besides what I already highlighted.

Button one more button. Tuck evenly. Roll sleeves. Stand up straight. Better quality jeans. I don't care for the skinny jeans on most and you don't look like the right type to pull it off. Get some basic straight leg, like a KMW 1950. You could get away with keeping the shirt. Use it as a self tailoring experiment if nothing else.

Why do ask for a fit critique when you already know the answer to this question? You said it yourself, the shirt and jeans fit like shit and the shoes are terrible. What else can we possibly add to this?

If there's nothing else to say, that's alright.

get some measurements then get everything proportioned, doesn't have to be extremely slim. just enough to not make you look like either that boxy fit guy or that dude who looks like shrunken silhouette.

it will probably take a lot of reading, time, trial and error with purchases.

The one thing I have to say has nothing to do with clothing: stand up straight. Your posture makes you look defeated.

Thank you for the advice!

That's gotta be a combination of the camera angle and the front of the shirt bunching the way it is, because I'm definitely standing straight in the picture. I do agree that dressing well doesn't get very far on someone with poor posture.

you knew the problems before posting, why don't you fix those problems first and then ask for a critique

This is a good point.

1. Ditch those jeans, look for a good quality straight-leg cut in a dark wash. The forum favourite in this category would be APC Rescues. If you don't have an APC near you I would suggest Levi's 501's.

2. The shirt isn't atrocious but it's blousy. Consider it an experiment and go to a tailor and have the sides taken in a couple of inches each and may be have darts put in the back. The sleeves should be slimmed as well. Your aim shouldn't be skin tight and shrunken, but slim so it gives your body some shape. Phat Guido in the "What are You Wearing Now" thread has casual shirt fit down to a science, so take cues from him.

3. Can't really see the shoes but if you're describing them as squared toed lace-ups I would suggest ditching them and going with some casual chelsea boots like these or these.

Broads will now be all over you.
