Both excellent cameras but not a replacement for DSLR in terms of features or sensor size (IQ, DoF, high ISO performance). Would come in right around the budget though, so OP will have to decide what his priorities are.

So wait, you want a Digital SLR but you don't want detachable lenses?

Sorry, I didn't meant I didn't want detachable lenses. I'm just looking for the most compact designs available.

the smallest dslr proper is the olympus e-420 with the 25/2.8 pancake. it's not much larger than m4/3 and aps-c compacts.
