I could do this. But I'm more concerned with the principle of this and why I'm finding myself in this situation to begin with.

I don't want to learn how to analyze financial systems. It won't make me happy. And yes, I do realize that work isn't about being happy.

I'm a legal intern and this happens to me everyday. I have had to teach myself lots of different things in order to properly research the legal issues or contractual issues surrounding them. It can be stressful. Even though I'm just an intern, it seems that this is pretty typical for the legal profession - especially those who try cases.

The good news is you get to learn a new skill on somebody else's dime. That makes you more valuable and you'll eventually earn more money because of it.

Hell yes. Someone is paying you to go to school!!!

Jump on the opportunity.

Sounds like you need to have a chat with your boss, unfortunately. Good luck

I am not exaggerating. It's like being a 10th grader and being given 3 days to prepare a lecture on Linear Algebra for an MIT math class, and then have to deliver it with a straight face.

Of course, when you are working on something other than financial concepts, this is usually quite easy to do. But when you delve into the world of quantitative analytics, it makes for some hairy situations and sleepless nights.

Also, this is a great poast. I like the way you inspire confidence and hope in people.

To the OP, consulting isn't the only field you experience this in. I know diddly squat about MC but it's pretty alarming to me that a project manager would assign you to such a task when you have absolutely no background in it. People spend years studying finance. To think that someone can just pick it up without any background in it is pretty surprising. Shouldn't the PM use the best tools for the job?

This. I've had other jobs/situations where I was asked to learn on the fly. No biggie; I've always jumped on it and done well. But those weren't situations where I needed the same type of backround that one needs to understand the basics of financial systems.

I've got no problem expanding my mind, quite the opposite. This isn't expanding my mind. Its me spinning my (and the project's) wheels and its creating a great deal of anxiety; not healthy.
