Is the granite/stainless steel kitchen a fad? - Page 4

Of course it is a fad. There was nothing wrong with those crappy laminate countertops we had in the past except that they stained every so often and would burn if you put anything hot directly on them. Tile countertops are total shit to clean, but I see them a lot.

Occasionally you'll see soapstone or corian or whatever, and steel countertops are very industrial feeling. But styles always change - partially market driven to get you to buy shit at Home Depot and partially just because people don't want the same stuff they had 10 years ago.

I wouldn't even be surprised if the whole combined kitchen/dining area/living area went away and we went back to separate rooms.

OT - I was watching House Hunter's International the other day and the buyer was complaining about not having granite and windows in the kitchen in this beautiful house in Morocco. Of course, nobody in Morocco with that kind of money would even step foot in the kitchen and I kept thinking how Americans don't really know how to be rich.

That's fantastic. And very true.

I always note the people who want a nice kitchen because they entertain a lot and "that's where people tend to gather." I'm always thinking, what kind of shit party are you throwing that people are gathered in the kitchen?

I think it is a small fad, but its also advancement in materials used for longevity. I've have 5 different types of counter tops: formica - stains, no hot stuff, ugly as shit concrete - stains, chips, looks industrial and awesome, expensive engineered stone/cesarstone - kind of stains, pain to keep water marks off, chipped like a mo-fo, looks nice though marble - stains like a mo-fo, looks high-end, some chips, stains like a mo-fo (yes, I said that twice) granite - only stained a small area, never chipped, looked ugly I have a friend with burned granite, its black/charcol with a slight texture - its really nice. There are nice looking granites out there but they definitely go up in price. I've seen some really modern homes with a nice corian cut squarely, but corian doesn't have much "wow" when you know its corian. As for stainless - I'm really on the fence. Next fridge will probably be paneled or something smooth and glossy.
