You don't like them?

Their early work was too... "new wave" for my taste, but when "Sports" came out in '83, I think they really came into their own - commercially and artistically.

Let us not forget other surf acts of the 60s. Dick Dale is from Mass, and the Ventures from Seattle, but I think they and other real instrumental surf acts are most identified with California.

Has anyone mentioned Jan & Dean or Dick Dale? Definitely titans of the California surf sound. EDIT: Dick Dale is already in the house.

Jefferson Airplane, anyone? Is Grace Slick from CA, or did she just end up in Mill Valley?

The Doors...

Jefferson Airplane, definitely!

Frank Zappa was originally from Baltimore.

60s bands:
Steppenwolf
Love
The West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band
Quicksilver Messenger Service
Tripsichord Music Box
Peanutbutter Conspiracy

And one 70s band:
Sparks, who did not make it big until they moved to England.
