The 700-horsepower über-Ferrari is the first-ever production-derived sports car to break the 7-minute barrier at the classic 20.832 kilometer Nordschleife (North Loop), a benchmark of automotive performance. The 599XX lapped the track in an astonishing 6 minutes, 58.16 seconds. That's almost half-a-minute faster than the mighty Ferrari Enzo.

Let's follow the Top Gear rules: If it can't go over a speed bump, it doesn't count. But any sub-7 minute lap around the 'Ring is insane.

Didn't Schumacher race his own around the track on Top Gear?

Oh, I'm sure people break the rule, but the point is that it is less of an accomplishment on Ferrari's part because they didn't engineer this car under the same limitations as its road-going competitors.

They've got the 599GTO in the pipeline, which is supposed to be a road-legal version of the 599XX (limited to 599 copies), so we'll see how close that gets to the 7 minute time. Though to be honest, I'm sort of sick of that stat being trotted out on the net for everything nowadays.
