On his birthday write him a check for $200 on a closed account (that way you don't get hit with any overage charges ).

Haha. This is the solution. Tell him you wrote a check thinking the money from him would be in your account, and now you're in trouble because his check bounced.

You know, it never really crossed my mind that your dad was trying to give you a good gift, but the funds just did not line up in time, etc...In that case it is a genuinely sad (for lack of a better word right now) situation, and I empathize. So, this route may be the best.

I was operating under the assumption that Dad used old check book or something more in line of a comical gaff than trying to give a gift, ie, being generous beyond his means.
