I like Jake Gyllenhaal's haircut seen here. It seems like it would be a better alternative to what you're going for:

The cut isn't military, but it's too severe for my tastes and projects a bit of an FU vibe. That may be why your friends are mistaking it for a military cut.

for the record, Marine Corps regs say 0-3" so depending on your MOS you could get away with 3" (they dont make you get high and tight) also, some Marines and SEALs sport longer hair and full beards over in them desert lands
