So today I just received my first pair of EGs in the mail--a pair of Edward Green Dovers in Dark Oak on the 606 last in size 9.5D UK / 10D US. I wear a 10D in Allen Edmonds and a 9E UK in C&J on the 348. Now, I know this goes against most suggestions, but I ordered based on what I assumed was my size, as I live very far away from any retailer and SkyValet has quite a liberal return policy.

Now, I understand that Edward Greens are meant to fit very closely to the foot. When I put it on, my foot fits in very nicely, it seems to be the perfect size all the way around. However, it is quite uncomfortable near my big toe. Is this normal, or should I ship them right back to SkyValet and wait until I can visit a retailer?

New shoes are stiff. They will break in some. However, its a judgement call on whether you think the discomfort is or isn't going to be resolved by breaking them in. I'd like to add a tautology here, so: the shoes either fit you, or they don't.

What size did you buy, and what size do you wear? I have the same shoe, 10.5D UK. I wear an 11D US, and the fit is perfect.

Personally I can get away with EG in my normal size in suede, but have to size up half a size in calf, but feet vary...

I wear a 9E UK in Crockett and Jones, and a solid 10D in Allen Edmonds. I think I may have to sub out for a 9.5E UK or maybe a 10D UK in EG, as the 9.5D UK just seems too tight. Ugh.

Based on this and most EG sizing advice I've read, you should be a UK9.5 (labelled 9.5/10) in EG. Fwiw, opinion seems split among US D wearers as to whether a UK D or E fitting is better. Looks like you'll have to try the UK9.5E...

Thank you for the advice--I think that the wider width may be the best option. I just wish that Memphis was not such a sartorial wasteland

It sounds like you'd be a UK 9.5 on the 888 last, but the 606 is a shorter last in the toe box area which likely is causing the discomfort. A UK 9.5 E might work although a UK 10 D may also. If it already fits well everywhere else you may want to stick to the same width. Here's an example of how crazy EG sizing is for me:

888 - 10/10.5 D
202 - 10.5/11 D (could likely do a 11/11.5 C here)
606 - 11/11.5 C

The 888 is the best all around fit for me although it is a slight bit tight in the toe box which generally goes away after some minor stretching. The 202 10.5/11 D fits nicely although I need a thin Tacco insole to take up some of the volume. I'm doing a touch of guesswork with the 606, but when I was in the EG shop I tried on a 10.5/11 C and that was clearly too tight in the toe box so I'm thinking a half size up in the same width will be ok. Fingers crossed as I just placed an order on that today!

/stressful.

Good luck, I hope it works out for you. I am just surprised as I have never had any problems with sizing before!

One other thing-as noted before new shoes can be stiff. The dover on a double sole is very stiff, and coupled with the thick upper and the way the apron is sewn, you will have quite a break in period. I am estimating it took 13 months to break in mine, wearing them twice a month. You can accelerate this by wearing yours more frequently.

Yeah, I am wary of that, but when my foot is resting I feel a large amount of pressure on my big toe--it feels like a bit too much. C'est la vie, serves me right for ordering shoes without finding my size first

606 I have found runs true to size, meaning when it says "10/10.5E" it is truly a 10.5 US in medium width. but you have to use your own judgment. IMO a new shoe should never cause pain...

Remember that others, too, have similar problems concerning the sizes of Allen Edmonds vs. Crockett & Jones. So, why not share your experience with them?

Here's the SF discussion about a different approach concerning shoe sizes.
