Make them wait. If they want you, they will.

I was in a similar position before getting my current job. My old company offered me a promotion with a substantial raise. However, I was given a tentative offer at another company with a lot more money and ton better career prospects but they couldn't give a formal offer for various HR reasons. So I had to find a way to stall for a few weeks. Ultimately I told my boss my predicament and she agreed to hold out and announce the promotions after I had recieved my offer. Very kind of her and many other places would not do the same.

Lesson of my story I guess is to be upfront. Just as they would do to you, tell them you have another interview before you can make your decision (you will mos tlikely want to phrase this much more carefully). If they really value you they would offer to wait a bit (maybe not the full two weeks).

If I can give you one piece of advice Doug, it would be 'ignore this guy's advice'. Singapore is an ass boring place to live with only one redeeming feature - a fantastic airport offering cheap flights to a bunch of better places. Spent two years there, and other than people and food (notably laksa) I miss nothing about the place. Very insular, closed minded type of place. Everyone uses words like 'sterile', 'diet Asia/Asia lite/Asia for beginners', 'clinical' and so on. Everyone is right.

Singapore has four official languages (English, Mandarin, Malay and Tamil). You can toss in some dialects here and there (Hokkien, Teochew, Cantonese, Hakka in that order) but those are mostly useful for profanity. In reality, you will get around fine with English, a little Mandarin will help you here and there (street food, taxis sometimes). Malay is useful basically only for ordering food (or for trips to Malaysia when you get bored or when the cabin fever kicks in). Tamil has kind of been demoted to novelty level now.

I would suggest you not turn down an offer unless you receive another. And do not tell anyone you are waiting to hear back from someone, just stall.

Also, I think HK/Singapore/Zhuhai/Macau are all similar places to live given a certain lifestyle though Zhuhai is a bit more low key. Oh, btw do you speak Canto? if not HK will not be as fun as you think.

I don't agree with this at all.

Especially if you speak only Mandarin/English and are a foreigner ...

Can't you "accept" the SG job, start filling out the paperwork, and then cancel on them if you get the HK job? It's kind of a dick thing to do, but you gotta look out for #1.

I thought about this but really didn't want to be so mean to the British Council. I ended up telling them I was waiting for my grad school reply because attending HKU was very important for me so I was unable to accept, but hopefully I could work together with them in the future. Figured it was better than telling them "No because I'm waiting for better jobs".

What's the difference in lifestyle between them?

Sorry if this tilts the direction of the thread a little bit (congrats on the job).

It's hard to really generalize the differences in the cities unless you're more specific with the question and the context. There is very little in common between the cities except that there are many Asian people. Even this is not very accurate because the type of Asian people are different... not just between Singapore/Macau/China+HK but just China+HK. ie: If we just generalize nightlife (for younger people, is different for older dudes); Singapore is (relatively) tame, Macau is for casino/prostitution trips (businessmen from HK/Singapore frequent the brothels w/ business partners), HK has the best night life/shopping and China is shitty.
