France is the best place to live says study

Britain has dropped to 25th place on a list of the best places in the world to live - behind countries such as the Czech Republic, Lithuania and Uruguay. While France tops the poll for the fifth year running, the UK's climate, crime rate, cost of living, congested roads and overcrowded cities have pushed it even further down from last year's ranking at 20. The Quality of Life Index, published by International Living magazine for the 30th year, says the French live life to the full, while Britons are over-worked. In all, 194 countries are surveyed on nine criteria, including the cost of living, culture and leisure, environment, safety, culture and weather. Australia is placed second after France, followed by Switzerland, Germany and New Zealand. Even former communist countries where unemployment is still rife are considered better places to settle down in than Britain, with Lithuania and the Czech Republic coming in at 22nd and 24th place respectively. Cars near high-rise flats in Vilnius, Lithuania: The Baltic state came in three places above Britain in the list Ice skaters trek around the frozen Lake Nasijarvi in Tampere, southern Finland: The Scandinavian country came 18th in the list of best places in the world Variety is also seen as a major factor in France's appeal, with the survey noting: 'Romantic Paris offers the best of everything, but services don't fall away in Alsace's wine villages, in wild and lovely Corsica, in lavender-scented Provence. Or in the Languedoc of the troubadors, bathed in Mediterranean sunlight.' Britain does not top a single category in the survey, which is compiled using official government statistics, data from the World Health Organisation and the views of the magazine's editors around the globe. The U.S. fell from third to seventh place because of the economic crisis last year. A magazine spokesman said: 'Sustaining the American Dream has escalated out of the reach of many.' Germany is widely praised for its efficiency and leisure facilities, with the magazine noting that 'the Harz Mountains now has a specialist hiking trail for nudists. Germany is arguably the world's most naturist-friendly country'.

I looked at poll on the IL website, and it appears the UK ranking was as low as it was purely due to the high cost of living and the inclement weather, which took the average right down.

This article is from the Daily Mail. The Daily Mail is a right-leaning British newspaper infamous for printing its 'Britain is a s**thole and is going down the tubes etc. Vote Conservative to end this Labour madness!!' General election round the corner perhaps? Yup.

The article has made embellishments to the IL survey that make it seem far worse than it actually is. The UK actually scored pretty much the same as France (1st) in the other categories, save a slight difference in healthcare.

I'm prepared to put up with expensive housing and a bit of rain to continue living here, TBH.

I would agree if they are referring to financially secure people. I wouldn't want to live there if I was poor or struggling.

Doesn't sound like the sort of publication that would tout France out of bias.

It's hard for other countries to emulate France's success via their model unless 80+ million people appear out of nowhere every year to vacation in all the other countries.

Keep in mind that this figure is inflated, though. In these international statistics, you count as a "tourist" as soon as you spend a single night in a place. By the sole virtue of being on the road from Northern Europe to the Mediterranean coast, France has many people who are there only for a short transit. To keep things in perspective, France receives less tourist revenue with 80 million people visiting than Spain (with about 40 million IIRC).

In any case, revenue from tourism is not a huge factor in this survey.

I thought that Sweden was supposedly a good place to live?

These surveys are pretty subjective, even the best ones. Don't put too much faith in them.

This is some enlightened approach to spamming.

Yeah, kind of how US News & World Report actually considers things like "Alumni Giving Rate" in determining what the top schools are.

France is the best place to live if you can find a job, maybe.

I think the Daily Mail realise the low UK ranking, with France topping the list, will antagonise their traditionally right-wing readership. It fits their political agenda to show how poorly the UK is apparently performing in comparison to other countries.

"Bloody hell, not only is France better than us, even crappy, insignificant backwaters like Uruguay and Lithuania are better! Better then the mighty Great Britain! This has got to stop!", that kind of thing (notice how, of all countries, they divisively mention both Uruguay and Lithuania in the first line, and feature a picture of a Lithuanian slum too).

The Dail Maily often refer to the British Empire and Britain's former influence over the world, and having France top the list actually reinforces their thesis that our country needs rescuing from the mess the dreadful Labour goverment has created (and there are big problems, TBH) and made viable again on the world stage.

If it means playing up and embellishing the virtues of other countries in order to reveal our supposed shortcomings, they're happy to do that. Turns out though that on closer inspection the UK ranking is very low primarily due to the weather and the expensive living. Despite the DM's histrionics, it's a bit of a non-story really.

The Daily Mail would love a return to the days of the Empire and Britain topping the list.

This is a fucking bullshit list. Australia would maybe rank high in the top 10 of best country's to risk getting killed by 95% of the fauna.
