Definitive Review of skin care/Shaving products, procedures, problems, and solutions

ITT We post the products we use successfully or otherwise, the procedures we use them with and what problems we remain with.

I would like to help build a quick reference by skin type for members to see which products are available and how well they're working for certain skin types. It will help people save money in the long run and save time, finding people with similar skin types and seeing what they've used and the results they've gotten.

This will help narrow down shaving soaps and creams that work for certain skin types as well.

Normal - Oily skin

I've tried Dermatologica deep pore rare earth cleaners with no success

I then switched to Kiehl's Facial fuel:

-Energizing wash
-Moisturizer
-Proactive toner

My results were much more successful then the Dermatologica paired with a typical OTS moisturizer.

I still had - Oily skin after 3-4 hours, random light breakouts and black heads

I added a FF Energizing scrub used every other day which really improved the evenness of my complexion.

I swapped my toner out for Neutrogena Oil-Free Triple Action Acne Stress control Toner and my face turned into an oily mess. It would be clear and dry immediately after using but by mid day it was an oil-slick.

I then switched to Kiehls Alcohol-Free Herbal toner and this cleared up the oiling problem. My face would often go 8 hours without oiliness. I was still using this with the FF energizing cleanser, scrub and FF moisturizer. It also doubles as an After-shave astringent.

I swapped out my FF Moisturizer for an oily-skin targeted moisturizer by Kiehls called Multi Purpose Facial Formula for Men, which works as a moisturizer daily and post-shave.

My skin is clearing up my complexion improving and at the surface is much clearer then before all this.

I'm Now Using
-Energizing Cleanser - Applied with a white cotton towel and warm-hot water
-Energizing Scrub (every other day) - Applied with a white cotton town and warm-hot water
-Herbal Toner - After dousing my face with cold water and letting it dry I apply this with a cotton ball
-Multi Purpose Facial Formula - Applied with a cotton ball

Shaving

Barbasol worked out, switched to Kiehls Close shaver cream + a Silver Tip Badger brush

I used Williams Mug and it dried out my face like crazy.

Still working with a triple blade, moving over to a single blade soon.

Now, your story:

I use soap, I get zits

Sounds like you love spending money on cosmetics. Try washing your face with water and a clean washcloth in the shower. Save the laundry list of expensive Kiehls products for your boyfriend.

I suppose I should shave with a bic and barbasol also, thanks.

I found that the maca root moisturizer from the Body Shop (do they have those in the States?) works well for me. I have chronic dry skin on my face, and this cleared it up without the greasy feeling that I get with some others.

I think Zirh products are hardly worth their retail price, but when they're found on sale, they are fantastic as well. I also buy a sampler now and then from the Real Shaving Co.--they have a pre-shave concoction (don't ask me what's in it, looks like a mix of oils and herbs) that heats my face before I shave.

I never really had a problem with zits, but I'm always dealing with dry skin and/or irritation after shaving. Although I really don't know much about skincare products, the few that I've used work much better than a bar of Irish Spring.

- A lot of shaving irritation is caused by cheap modern razors with multiple blade heads. Try a razor with a single old fashioned safety razor blade...

Yes, actually, single use Bic for sensitive skin. One shave and throw away. Of course, to compliment your designer make up and cosmetic collection you will need something useless like this, which uses the actual shaving apparatus of a $10 razor. Seriously, try the wash cloth and water. If you don't find your skin looking and feeling better after rubbing all those chemicals into your skin everyday, I'd be really surprised.

Thanks for the tip, believe it or not I've tried that and it didnt work. BTW I have something far nicer than that in the works, I'm putting the finishing touches on it today. Gaboon Ebony and stainless steel stand, Merkur Barber Pole Razor and a Jack Black Silver Tip Badger Brush. The stand is something I'm building, actually finished building and now putting the tung oil finish on.

Is anyone on here using Castle Forbes shaving cream for sensitive skin? I'm considering it not only as a way to increase the amount of money I spend on my "Cosmetics collection", but also as a way to shave without nicks. I'm using Kiehls close-shaver now and it's so/so IMO. Moving up to a Double Edge razor as soon as it arrives (hopefully this week). P.S. Thank you LA Guy.

For shaving creams, I only use Salter's or Proraso. Art of Shaving makes a good lavender cream as well, but I used up mine and didn't replenish since I think it's overpriced. If I could score a tub of E&C Sweet Almond Oil cream, I would do so in a heartbeat - too bad they discontinued it. It was fantastic. (actually, I have one tub left but am blowing through the rest of my stocks).

The creams I've tried and discarded: Trumper's, Truefitt. I've never tried Castle Forbes

For soaps, I like most of the milled soaps: Tabac, L'Occitane cade, Turefitt. I like the Proraso and Prep soaps very much. The soaps by The Gentleman's Quarter are also fantastic.

The soaps I've tried and discarded: Mama Bear, Honeybee Sue, others I can't recall now.

Generally speaking I like soaps better than creams because I get a more consistent lather with soaps. Also: soaps are supposed to be dry, unlike creams that can dry out. Eventually I'll be all-soaps, just for their low maintenance.

Aftershaves: I use Thayer's medicated superhazel. Ogallala makes a great bay rum aftershave as well, but it's strongly scented: lasts for hours. TGQ makes a great mentholated aftershave as well. Proraso aftershave balm is essential for wintertime,

Trumper's skin food - I can take it or leave it.

For reference, I've been using a straight razor for four years now.

Soap: I use whatever we have on hand to wash my face. I have a few bags of clay mask, but I hardly ever remember to use them: every 4-6 months or so. Guess they're not all that essential.

I'll use whatever moisturizer we have on hand - right now it's aveeno, but I also have some C&E creams that were on sale. Even at 1/3 price, I still probably overpaid. But they smell nice.

Combination skin.

I use Aviene soapless gel cleanser, then use Clinique scruffer, and Clinique M lotion SPF 21 mosturiser. It is absoloutly fantastic, although you do have to mosturiser with the scruffing lotion as it will dry you out quickly otherwise. I use this routine twice a day morning and night.

Then on top of this I use Avene Clenance K as an on the spot emergency gel, for those blemishes that always seem to pop up before a meeting etc.

Then occasionally I will use the Lab Series invigorating face scrub, but skip on the scruffing lotion for a few days before and after, as both are exfoliators and using both would be a little to harsh on my skin.

A little pricey but worth it as i've gone from having problem breakout prone skin, to pretty clear, good skin. The scruffing lotioncombined with the SPF mosturiser has also helped dramatically fade a few marks from nasty shaving nicks, and a few very bad blemishes.

Has anyone tried an aspirin mask? I gave it a try but didn't notice anything other than added exfoliation from the aspirin granules.

Ouch. Pretty harsh for a guy who in another thread got caught up defending his extravagant grocery bills to a bunch of wolves.

Like you care about what you eat, the OP cares about how he looks and thus spends more money than you would on "cosmetics." What's with all the hipocracy on this board? People have different priorities in life.
