Advice on growing long hair

Hey everyone, I'm new to the forum and I apolgize in advance if this topic has been discussed somewhere before. I just joined recently after finding quality responses from the members here.

Ok so I have had short hair for pretty much all my life (I'm 26 now) and I've tried just about every hairstyle that is out there. My goal now is to try out a long hair style. I am Indian and have the typical Indian hair (I still dont' know how to describe it..is it wavy?).

I have heard several things, such as I should actually trim the hair as I grow while some say that I should just let it grow to a certain length and then style it. Plus I would like my hair to be silky.

I was hoping someone who has gone thru this process would be able to tell me what exactly I should do. I am pretty dedicated to this thing. I haven't cut my hair in nearly 3 months and I am willing to keep it till the end of the year or more. Right now I am in the bad phase of growing long hair where it just makes me look like I am a FOB. But what more should I be doing?

So here's a photo of an actor whose hairstyle I'm trying to go for:

Any advice would be highly appreciated

Bring those pictures in with you to the hair stylist. You'll probably have to get some trims every few months to shape it. Be prepared for a "poofy" stage.

that a horrible long haircut. its very top heavy and looks kind of mushroom-ish on the top and then has all those weird wispy thin textured pieces on the bottom. it looks almost like a mullet, kinda american idol 2004-ish. the cut would look better if that top layer was grown out much longer.

the key to pulling off long hair for guys is that it needs to look a bit unkempt (no matter whether you are actually styling it or not). too neat and styled 'looking' and then your crossing over into lady territory.

i had almost shoulder length hair for a phase, and while growing it out, i had it thinned and cleaned up into a presentable shape about every 3-4 months (i have ridiculously thick hair and if i had just let it grow, i'd be a big mess). it took about 8 months to get where i was going, but the end result was really close to this http://emywinchester.files.wordpress...keithurban.jpg (no i don't like him, but ya gotta admit, minus those blonde highlights, keith urban has an awesome head of hair).

if you have what you've described as 'typical indian hair' i'm thinking its probably thick and there's a lot of it with a bit of wave. the thinning out, might not be a bad idea for you.

OP, I'm surprised it wasn't one of these clowns:

There isn't a real science to it, but you should be prepared to not look 100% cool for about a year, there's gonna be some awkward stages where all you can do is a pomp or a combover, and then later you should just tie it back to hide the shape til all of the length is in place. (I have hair down to my collar bone btw, it took about 2 years before I was satisfied with it)

Long and silky hair is a woman's crowning glory. This is indeed true because the strands are strategically placed in the body where it can be immediately seen. With this, a lot of women, and men as well thrived on growing long and silky strands. However, beautiful hair does not grow long overnight. Nor does it grow long fast with chemical applications and treatments. While it is true that hair can be grown long fast with treatments, you are definitely not assured of healthy and beautiful head.

Since a lot of women want to look their best, growing long hair fast has been one of their personal grooming goals. It should be noted though that not all women are blessed with long straight strands. This does not mean though that curly hair is not beautiful; for the beauty of the hair is defined by the healthy state that it is in.

Growing hair is not an easy task, since the hair grows only half an inch every month. Therefore, it probably takes two years to grow to shoulder length. Some people could not wait this long. There must be some other ways of growing long hair faster. But, it should be noted that these ways should not damage the hair in any way. It is a fact that while hair is resilient, it cannot renew itself once it has grown out of your scalp already. As such the hair should be treated with extra care. Here are some tips for growing long hair faster.

Get the proper nutrition. Like all the other parts of the body, the hair also needs the proper nutrients. It is important to get the proper nutrition that your hair needs such as beta carotene and vitamin B among others. Foods that are considered good sources of these vitamins should be incorporated into the daily diet.

Minimize unhealthy hair habits. In order to grow long healthy hair fast, it is advisable to avoid unhealthy hair habits. Although these habits are assumed to enhance the hair, a lot of these actually damage the hair. Some of these unhealthy habits include the use of damaging hair products, chemicals, and the constant application of heat.

Get rid of hair growth retarding lifestyle practices. Nicotine, caffeine, alcohol, and junk foods contribute to the retardation of hair growth. Thus if you want to grow long hair fast, you should avoid all of these.

Take vitamins and minerals. A lot of vitamins and minerals contribute to faster hair growth. Unfortunately though, not all of these vitamins and minerals are provided by your daily diet. As such, it is advisable to take vitamins and minerals that could supplement for the requirements of growing hair faster

Back in my wilder days I decided to grow my hair long and then donate it to cancer patients. 4 or 5 years later it was down to the small of my back. What a PITA that adventure was. To keep it looking good and undamaged was a friggin task from Hell. I now can appreciate what a woman with long healthy hair has to go through to keep it looking good.

Anyway, the pics of the style you're looking for isn't what I call long hair. In the Winter my hair is that length and doesn't require much maintenance. Shampoo and condition it with a decent product and let it air dry and you'll be fine.

8, 9 inches or so. It looks similar to the second pic in your OP in the dead of Winter. I grow it longer to keep the chill off my neck and ears when I'm out in the field all day.

If you were a Native American, I'd say go for it.

This dude looks dope, he can probably turn into a werewolf.

But since you're Indian, I'd say keep your hair as short as possible.

This dude does not look dope. He looks ridiculous, and probably sheds a lot. Plus I doubt he turns into a werewolf.

Therefore, my advice is to become AN Indian, or keep your hair short.

The in-between period sucks, but you'll have to live with it if you want long hair. To go from a buzz to chin-length took me about a year.

I've got a lot of hair, so I have to get mine thinned and trimmed monthly to keep it from looking like shit when growing out.
