Ways to end a conversation?

Thread Starter
This came up at a recent law school open house. When you're basically in a room to mingle with a bunch of strangers and you're talking with someone, what's a polite way to end the conversation?

I've constantly found myself in situations where I'm talking with someone I just met for a while, but after a while either the conversation has stalled or it's just been too long (I mean, you're not supposed to introduce yourself to just one person at these kind of things); at this point, I never really know how to politely end the conversation. Recently I've been doing "Well, it's been nice talking to you," but I've always thought that's a bit rude to end a convo so abruptly. Sometimes I'll say, "Well, I'm going to go get another drink," but who's that fooling?

What's the "SF-approved" way of doing this?

Ever hear of the expression "it's not what you say, it's how you say it?" Confidence is key.

Your drink excuse is perfectly fine. When you are mingling at an event and meeting lots of new people chances are the other person is doing the same and also looking for an excuse.

You could also try being upfront and honest: " Well, I am supposed to introduce myself to a few people over there. Thanks for chatting and I will catch up with you later." or " I have no further questions."

I think you just keep pressing the "use" key until they stop giving you new responses.

"It was great getting to meet you but I was just on my way to the washroom, I'll be back." end it with a firm handshake, get the eff out out there... ...and never come back...that's what I always do.

All you have to do is look the other person in the eye, tell them how nice it was to meet them, and smile. Works every time.
