Of those two, I'd go with the 501's. However, I'd steer clear of STF (shrink to fit) until you're more familiar with denim, if not bypassing it altogether. Search for that phrase to get a butter understanding of what it is. If I may make a suggestion, I believe, as do the majority of people here @ SF that a more fitted look is more flattering. Keeping that in mind, I would recommend something like Levi's 514, which are their straight leg jeans, or possibly 511, their skinny jean (depending on your size/body type). Don't get caught up in buying $300 uber-customizable imported Japanese super-denim. Lots of the people on this forum are gung-ho into that stuff, but it's unnecessary. 99.9% of the world won't be able to tell their ridiculously priced jeans from a solid pair of well-fitting Levi's or similar brand. Hopefully this helps. P.S. Don't let the haters get to you, use this forum for the information you need and disregard the trolls.

Nothin wrong with Dickies in general. Go with the Levis, since they will have a much better cut if sized correctly. Next time, try the "I have a jean" thread: http://www.styleforum.net/showthread.php?t=55144

I just wanted to say that I don't have Japanese denim for other people. I don't think people with real style buy clothes to impress.

I hate to be the guy who takes internet seriously but this argument always comes up-

"99.9% of people won't be able to tell the diff between your 375 dollar jeans and 30 dollar ones so that 345 dollars extra is a waste."

We are all aware. No one here shells out that much money to show regular people they shelled out that much money. Point is irrelevant. If you do want the dollar value of your clothes to be apparent, the Ed Hardy jeans above are what you ought to look for. Pair with LV belt and Burberry scarf so your dollars spent are recognizeable at a glance.

The point of that comment was to make OP aware that he doesn't need to spend a ridiculous amount of money on a pair of jeans to look good. Too many people on this forum like to give off the impression that 200 and 300 dollar pair of jeans are the only way to dress. Don't worry folks, no one thinks you spend $375 on a pair of jeans to impress people.

I don't believe that for a second. I think they just have a different audience in mind.

I'm sure people buy struff at least partly because it's obscure.

I disagree. I think new users usually dress on the cheap and so do many senior members. Of all the sf groupthink dictums exclusively pricey jeans seem to be on their way out in terms of "you need this, others won't do". Expensive jeans are just talked about more because frankly they're more interesting to talk about for real or nonreal reasons..

If you are looking for Dickies and Levis, the best option might Junya Watanabe's x Levis jeans. The price is the other story...
