Time to stock up on GE stock. That's who benefits from this damn transition.

The difference in light output in the same lamp between the old and new bulbs is astounding. The new bulbs suck.

This is such a ridiculous proposition. Trade one type of waste (electricity usage) for another (mercury). How does this balance out in the end? Flourescent lighting sucks in most situations.

There are good quality CFL bulbs. Look for a color rendering index in the 90s and and it does work.

Homedepot bulbs are hard on the eyes. I go into some peoples homes and I wonder how they don't go crazy with lighting like that.

You are debating color rendering when the very rights upon which our nation was founded are under attack!?!?

It would be amusing if incandescent bulbs become the high-volume flush toilets of this decade... remember years ago when the low-volume toilets were mandated? They didn't perform very well and in some parts of the country there were virtual black markets on used or refurbished "old" toilets for new home construction, or renovations, because they flushed much better with the higher water volume.

x2. The ones I've purchased myself have been fine, but two years ago everybody in my county received a pack of three "free" CFL bulbs from the power company which were utter crap. Low illumination, and two have burnt out already.

I've got a question about CFLs. We've tried to use CFLs in our garage door opener light and the garage ceiling light. The bulb on the garage door opener will last about 5 days if we use a CFL, and the one on the ceiling (about 3 feet away from the opener) will last about 2 weeks. I've chalked the failure up to vibration. Is this crazy or are CFL's more suceptible to vibration-induced failure? It seems like the incandescents ought to be more fragile.

Has anyone found a CFL that actually works in a garage door opener?

+1.

+1. I guess that it might be something to do with my wiring, but I don't use my living room light terribly much and yet CFLs tend to burn out quite quickly. I've had two out of three burn out in under a year, and a similar time-frame for the kitchen light. Frankly, based on my brief experience, I'm not doing any better than I did with incandescent globes and yet I'm paying more.

I get the "curly" ones rather than the bulb-shaped ones, as (again, in my brief experience), the bulb-shaped ones take a long time to warm up, whereas the curly ones are "on" pretty much immediately.

I also make sure to get CFL's in "warm white" as against that blue tinge you mentioned. I don't know how much it costs there, but an Osram 18w CFL would cost me around $6 here.

"Warm white" still isn't very warm, at least when compared to incandescent light.
I suppose that we'll just have to get used to it, though...

I got a pack of 4 "100 watt replacements" for 88 cents at Costco. At another time they had the "60 watt" types for that price too. Awful garish blue. Makes my eyes hurt same as the fluorescents at schools and offices. Real mood killers. I use incandescent bulbs in lamps for dates.

I don't conserve water. Ever drive up I-5 and see the lakes of wasted irrigation water? They waste more in a single day than I could ever use in a lifetime.

I don't conserve electricity for the same reason. I shouldn't have to point to Las Vegas as an example.
