eBay fees, while annually on the rise, aren't so much that a seller could offer that much of a better deal on most items to sell off-site.*

*Unless the seller is one of those poor folks who's gonna get totally reamed by the fee changes going into effect in a couple of months.

I haven't seen an email -- are they bringing back listing fees or something?

Basically, they're changing the final value fee structure to favor those sell relatively inexpensive items. I don't have the figures nearby, but most sellers (real sellers, not just the hobbyist cleaning out his attic) will see their overall fees go unchanged or even improve. But the change is going to bite the high-ticket item sellers in the ass. Presently, the final value fee on items that go for $900 (or maybe it's a grand, I don't recall) is a flat rate of (I believe) $60 plus 2 percent of the balance. Starting in May, it's going to be a flat 9 percent fee of the selling price. That's quite the difference when dealing with stuff that sells in the thousands.

Kind of funny, though, that you guys are worried about the insertion fees, since eBay lowering those a while back was just a slight of hand that let them increase the final value fee. The end result was less paid upfront, but more money going toward eBay once you settled up.

I think everybody knew that, but personally I only sell one thing every few months and never get more than a few hundred bucks, so my self-centred concerns are allocated appropriately. Paying $2.00 week after week to relist a few items that weren't selling was more annoying than paying a higher final value fee once or twice -- but that is because I'm not selling BNWT Kiton so I am well aware how differently this will play out for other types of sellers.

I wonder if a serious rival for eBay will ever arise.

I doubt it, but the general thought among many regular eBay sellers is that you're nuts to be putting all of your eggs in the eBay basket - again, if you're trying to make anything resembling a living from e-commerce sales - and not using it as a cog in the machine that is your online selling presence.

For the occasional seller, there's really not much better where most items are concerned. eBay just has such a massive online presence that it remains the best place to get the most eyes on your product.

James Long cardigan. IIRC somebody posted about this when it came out.

Pretty cool for the price, assuming it's better quality than regular Topman stuff.
