Trash Talking in Sports!

Are you for it or against it when there's an elite shit talker (think Muhammad Ali) working his magic before the event? Does it cause excitement and eagerness for you? Do you talk shit yourself when you play or played sports?

I really like talking shit when playing sports. Even if I am losing. It just makes it more entertaining. Some people just don't enjoy it though.

I generally think trash talk is amusing, but only when done cleverly. Today, it is rarely done cleverly. Moreover, the media blows everything so far out of proportion that it makes things less entertaining. Even the most trifling trash talk gets reported widely. Meh.

Ali was good at witty trash talk. One of my favorite sports trash talk moments was in Game 1 of the NBA Finals - Bulls vs. Jazz. It was a weekend game, and Malone was on the line looking to put the game away, when Scottie Pippen walked over to him and whispered "The mailman doesn't deliver on Sunday." Malone missed both and MJ hit a three to win it, I believe.

They just don't talk trash like they used to.

I still play alot of tournament softball and will talk trash when playing against friends on the opposing team. It's different though because they know it's all in fun and games and it's more of a game to try to one up the other person. Against people I dont know, I won't trash talk unless the other team starts it off and are real asses about it (usually the same people on the same teams and their teammates don't even like them). Then its usually less about words and more about making a play and then making certain gestures or expressions.

This is key. I forgot to mention in my original reply that trash talking is the most fun when it is with friends. With strangers it is just kind of weird/insecure.

Its fun to talk trash to friends who youre competitive with. Dont play much with strangers unless theyre friends' friends in which case i try to respect that and keep my mouth shut.

Another +1 to the friends thing. I'll do it if I'm competing against friends, but it's all in jest. Against people I don't know, however, I keep my mouth shut and let my performance do the talking. In my experience when there's a guy doing a lot of trash talking he's usually a low-middling player who is more of a retarded mascot than a contributor.

Like others, I love to talk trash to my friends.

I rarely talk trash to strangers. I'm not a great athlete and many of the good athletes I've played against are lazy until you talk trash to them. So, I keep my mouth shut. But if a guy is an asshole and I'm better than him, I'll relentlessly trash talk. It's funny to watch his shot selection deteriorate as he foists up ridiculous shots to try to shut me up.

This.

The look on the faces of the crowd are great. Reggie talked mad shit, got in your head, made you hate him and completely took you outta your game.

I have always and will always talk shit. It doesn't matter whether I'm good or terrible or with friends or enemies.
When I was a 9th grader playing 32:00 a game on varsity, I would talk shit to the seniors on other teams. When I was a senior, playing about 4:00 a game on varsity, I would talk shit to the freshman (from the bench obviously). It is the second best thing about sports.
