Organizing your computer documents

Do you file multiple (same subject) documents or email messages into single continuously scrolling files? For example: a twenty message email exchange regarding the new penis turbo enlarger, would go into a single continuously scrolling document called enlarger. While monthly paper billing letters from Smuttworld Video, that you've scanned into jpg format, would go into a single continuously scrolling document called smutt. I waste so much time opening and closing documents, when it would appear to be much easier to file this way. Am I overlooking something? Is there a good reason why it's best to keep everything as multiple single files? Maybe I'm the last person on earth to make an attempt at computing efficiency, but judging by how long it's taking to get a refund on that gimmicky enlarger, I think not. Lear (the ugly one)

Why do you need to save your emails into a document?

You probably shouldn't save emails more than a month or two. Anything longer than that is just going to get you into trouble. Purge that shit every other week, ideally.

I wrote this long message about my org methods, but then I realized, what the hell are you doing filing individual emails that way?

Yes, I know what you're trying to say. The simplified version of what I'm trying to say, is that scrolling a single, very long document, might be easier to read whatever the source. I also agree with not letting your mail client fill with 4,000 messages (as someone I know does). However, I sometimes find it useful to keep a record of back and forth communications.

As for documents (such as attached receipts); instead of 12 or 52 separate documents, you could put them all into a single document for that year.

I scan all my receipts into a single pdf based on type (electronics, home stuff, clothes, etc). It makes it easy to keep things together if i ever need to make an insurance claim and also provides a backup in case something happens ot the physical receipt.

What the OP is doing is retarded though.

I actually plan on switching to a scan, OCR and gmail system. That way I can search and they are backed up much more securely than my backup methods would be.

Of course, that requires me not to worry about what Google knows about me, so YMMV.
