Wow. Just wow.

You really think it was the cologne you wore that caused the girl you were hooking up with to sleep with you each time? And you think it is the same cologne that is causing her to screw the guy she is DATING?

I would like to sell you some oregano.

Seems like a fair question. The most obvious reason historically probably was to cover up bad smells, then it slowly moved into smelling unique or good. It's probably some indication of disposable income/wealth as well , and in the modern world, a sign that says you pay attention and care about your overall appearance, and may/not have good taste when you do.
Smell is also a very strong memory trigger in addition to emotional experience even if you don't think so.

less about what it means to others, and more about my own personal experience - I like it becuase scent creates a relatively strong experience. It has emotional meaning to me as I work through the process of smelling something. You can enjoy something like say eating, but then you're full, and the meal time is over. Imagine if you could keep chewing something all day.
I actually enjoy the smell of whatever cologne I'm wearing,
thinking about it as it changes over time,
it compliments what I'm wearing or feeling like that day, or maybe puts me in a certain mood (I mean I can only drink so often, right?)
and intellectually it's another hobby where I can learn about something and appreciate the intricacies in knowing why I like one over another

even if it's all bull, at least I've bought into it and waht's most important is I believe it's important and makes a difference so I feel better and behave in different ways becuase of what I'm wearing that day and it's that change in behavior/attitude that people notice more then anything, even if they don't know why.

I think I just have extremely undeveloped appreciation for the finer things in life.

Haha, I must say I never noticed that before. I originally posted on here with a shoe question. Hence needshoehelp. You make a good point, however.

if anything being freshly showered before a date totally assisted in getting laid (like you just stepped out of the shower 10min before showing up at her door)... which is kind of hard to do in NYC when you have to commute using the subway, buses, ferries, and dank cabs.

anything that can equate to being clean and freshly showered in a scent would probably assist in getting ass.

I wear more difficult scents when I am not around other people as well. Generally, I favor eau de fart, beer and dog.

Why are Americans such children when it comes to this subject, that's what I would like to know.

We're not so much children as we are kids.
