please recommend contemporary composers

I feel like there should be more on my iPod than just Max Richter and Abel Korzeniowski

I have not heard Abel Korzeniowski's work, but for something different and meatier, John Adams, Christopher Rouse, Thomas Ades, Kaija Saariaho, and Jennifer Higdon are all very different composers whose work are interesting, and still accessible.

There's lots of good stuff from the 20th century that should be heard more, too.

I'm quite fond of Shostakovich but I think his being deceased makes him not contemporary enough for you.

Embarassingly, there's very little classical music in my collection dating from later than the '60s. I highly recommend SQ #4 by Richard Wernick, however.

+1 to all of A Y's suggestions. Osvaldo Golijov and David Lang are two more contemporary composers whose work is quite accessible. (Check out "La Pasion Segun San Marcos" and "The Little Match Girl Passion" respectively.)

Helmut Lachenmann is wonderful, but much more "difficult." Wolfgang Rihm is also very good.
