Which I guess just proves your point.

And regarding the Pentagon City Rack: 97% crap and 3% mediocrity. Potomac Mills Rack has gone down the last few years, but is head and shoulders above Pentagon City.

AEP

Good to know that the Potomac Mills one is better. The Pentagon City one is such a huge waste of time.

Nordstrom (such as it is, says me a common stockholder) has morphed. Even the main store barely holds my interest these days...

I should have added the disclaimer that I haven't been to Potomac Mills in probably more than a year. So, NR has had plenty of opportunity to go further downhill since then.

Saks Off Fifth in Leesburg plus other locations are having a Men's event this weekend - Preview Sale. Buy one suit, get another free. I've seen quite a few Valentino Roma, Zzegna, Ermenegildo Zegna, Calvin Klein Collection suits. I heard some Armani Collezioni suits should be arriving soon plus some Isaia.

Sportscoats will be 40% off - last time i visited there were some Samuehlson, Valentino, Zzegna, Calvin Klein Collection, a few Brioni, and A few Ermenegildo Zegna .

Has anyone seen wool underwear (shirts, briefs, boxers and the like) at a physical store in the DC area? I bought a smartwool shirt from Sierra trading and it was disappointingly itchy. I'd like to go check them out in person and feel the fabric first. Sale prices would help, too.

How about REI or Hudson Trail Outfitters?

The Filene's Basement on Rockville Pike is closing. I didn't see anything of note in briefly looking at ties, shirts, or pants (and its only 30% off at this point), as I was mainly looking at Buy One (at list price), Get One Free for suits. Of SF interest, Calvin Klein Collection by Vestimenta going for $599 and Hickey Freeman mainline were $499. Some CK solid colors were available, but HF had mostly the Madison model but I did see one Barrett model in my size; HF were mostly pinstripes. But $250 each is a pretty good deal for a fully canvassed suit at a brick & mortar store to be able to try it on.

Of course, selection in your size may vary.

Not a sale announcement, but a new store I walked by today in Gtown called Streets (WaPo writeup: http://www.washingtonpost.com/business/capitalbusiness/new-mens-retail-concept-coming-to-dc/2011/08/17/gIQAi1RfUJ_story.html ).

Window displays were good-lookin' - I took a look around in the store and stuff seemed nice. Some nice wool ties, and suits in interesting fabrics. Mostly HF, some HSM.

I was there yesterday and although I was impressed I thought everything was very overpriced.

Actually didn't get to look at any prices as they were not very saliently displayed (sounds like for good reason smile.gif )

I was on my way to the Ledbury Popup store last Thursday and visited the new Brooks Brothers store on M St. A beautiful 3-story flagship store that's less classic BB than their other DC locations and targets a more more modern style. I really liked a lot of their merchandise.

The Filene's basement @ Metro Center is closing. Was there looking for some underwear and the closing took my by surprise. They used to carry Zegna suits, but they seemed to have moved them out. the best I could find were some HSMs. Suits were take 30% off the ticket price. Maybe going lower (?). Also, some of the suits seem to have tags that said Syms, which is the discount retailer. Syms has never impressed me with their stuff, IMO. Maybe Syms bought them out; not sure.

Connecticut Ave still has Hickey Freeman suits at 30% off ($499 or $599). Solid navy HF "Ltd." line available in many sizes-- looked like they were all 42+. Additional mainline HF in many sizes too. They seem to no longer carry Oxxfords, unfortunately.

My understanding is that all Filene's are closing. Syms declared bankruptcy and may be closing its primary stores as well as the Filene's brand it purchased hardly a year ago.
