Holy CRUM. I just realized that Torchwood is an anagram for Doctor Who.

woah .. did not know that. Been meaning to watch the Torchwood series, maybe that'll be my summer project. Been watching way to much late night talk shows - need to find something else to watch from 12-3.

Torchwood is terrible. I heard good things about the Children of Earth mini but that was long after I gave up on it. A real embarrassment to Doctor Who. A spinoff of a kids' show with gratuitous sex and profanity? What were they thinking?

Also, Smith is the best Doctor since Tom Baker.

+1 to the first part -1 to the second. Eccleston was better than Tennent and Tennent was better than Smith.

First season of Torchwood was shit. It was a cheesy alien-adventure show, with people randomly swearing and going at it.

Then it got good.

Then Children of Earth came out, and it go amazing. Definitely recommend. They're making another mini-series as well.

I find mini-series to be the best format for television. You get a bigger budget, and rather than a bunch of stand alone stories, you have a great giant one, shorter than a full TV season, but longer than a movie trilogy. The perfect compromise, with no need to make needless filler. I think more shows should be like that, and most Sci-Fi stuff as well.

Agreed. Eccleston could've rivaled Baker as the best Doctor of all, but the prick wanted out of his contract faster than you can say George Lazenby. Would've loved to have seen how he would have developed his character further. I pretty much enjoy the show no matter who plays The Doctor.

Eccleston seemed uncomfortable with the comedy. He'd have been better served if they'd let him be broody and dropped the zaniness they kept forcing on him. There are other types of humor that would have worked better with his style.

Tennant was a fan playing the Doctor and it showed. He lacked gravitas -- too much shouting in a bid to seem authoritative.

Smith, on the other hand, is at his best when he suddenly drops the shtick and gets very, very quiet. In those moments, he convinces me in a way none has since Tom Baker.

It helps that Smith, like Tom, is a genuine eccentric. And Smith's apparently a clothes horse too. He had a lot of input into the costume, pushing for the bowtie and tweed.

There were some great pics of him about town after he was announced as the next Doctor. You would definitely notice him if you saw him in the street, he likes his clothes.
I agree with exactly what you said about Eccleston and Smith. Eccleston should have been darker, more reserved. He was on his own for a few centuries, having killed his race. He played dark well.

Smith is great, but his quiet parts are amazing. You really do get a bit of a chill. I think a large part of it is the fact he looks somewhat odd/alien. When he's smiling and talking, you don't notice it. But during the quiet and still parts....he strikes you that he's not entirely human. It's somewhat creepy, and intentional I think.

Tennant was also too good looking. Smith is just the right kind of weird.

My whole family loves this show, I can't seem to get into it near as much as I can Boardwalk Empire.

Another vote for Matt Smith. He's currently ahead of Tom Baker for me. I've been watching this show for 35 years and didn't think anyone would be better than Tom. A brave choice by The Moff, but it certainly paid off. I'm happy to see more episodes in the autumn, though nostalgia plays a large part in this sentiment: I used to love watching Who on dark evenings when I was a kid in the 70s. Viewing figures might be higher in autumn and winter, I suppose, but Doctor Who has superb time shifted viewing figures anyway.

Just finished watching the episodes of the new season on iTunes. As a new Dr Who fan, all I can say is WOW. This is officially one of my new favorite shows. The mid-season cliffhanger was superb as has been the Smith centric show as a whole. I'm a believer.

I should watch some of the past incarnations of The Doctor, but with how good things have been i'm not sure any of it would live up.

It's back!

This season/mini-series of Torchwood is sucking hard.
