THat might explain it. It is a tremendously romantic place, and if you've ever really spent time there, it stays with you (not unlike Paris). Seeing the show portray it in a very real, and un-caricatured way is very nostalgic.

I know the writer and I think he gets it mostly right: http://www.gq.com/blogs/the-q/2010/0...me-failed.html

never seen the wire, but this guy doesn't seem to understand that treme is NOT the wire. draw parallels all you want, but that's no review as far as i'm concerned. going on a rant about how one show is not another doesn't do much of anything other than make the writer look bitter and nostalgic.

from what i gather, you don't really need to know a damn thing about baltimore to understand the wire. not the case for treme. treme's about the city. the characters are just there to illustrate it. if you don't have much familiarity with NOLA, it's gonna take longer to get that, if ever.

some truth there, baltimore has a more severe case than most, but not really foreign to any city with a similar makeup.

I didn't read the article, but I totally disagree that it takes longer or is somehow more diffcult to understand what Treme is about. Just watch the show and don't over over think it...the beauty of how David Simon and Co put their stuff together is that you can get totally engrossed in the place. The different levels of social interaction that weave together, its a badass show and hits a different vibe for me than The Wire. Also, its pretty great watching such a fufilling show that isn't centered around crime or violence...I mean, it had a few moments of course, but I'm tired of watching all that shit on TV.

I will concede that you don't have to know Baltimore to love "The Wire", but you need to understand NoLA to get "Treme'. But in their own ways, both are incredible shows.

Bump after season 2 premiere.

Should I get into this show? I'm not much of a jazz guy and the first few eps I watched last year really didn't have much going for them.
