Shoe fit advice needed!

All- This may seem like a basic question, but how exactly is a nice dress shoe suppose to fit? I sort of went by the standard thumbnail width from end of the toe to the end of the shoe, is this correct? Or, because of the narrowing at the end of a dress shoe does this rule not hold. I'm asking because I have a little bit of heal slippage in my new CT shoes, and they are longer then the thumbnail width standard. However, I've heard that when they break in a bit, the heal slippage may ease. Thank you for all your help. Best regards.

It depends. With toes that may well be more tailored than, say, your running shoes, you may well have much more room than you're used to in the toe. It may take some getting used to. Heel slippage may well be a sign of too-large shoes, however. Try seeing if the widest part of the shoe seems to cross your instep in the "right" place, if that makes sense.

From "How a Shoe Should Fit" (p. 86 of Esquire March 2006)...

Squeezing into a suit that doesn't fit? We've all done it. Squeezing into a shoe that's too tight? Murder. Here's what you need to know to keep your feet happy. At the heel: This is the one place where your shoe may hurt initially, but fear not. It'll subside. Your heel should rest comfortably against the back liner without slipping. At the instep: The tongue should rest lightly on the top of your foot, without the feeling of too much pressure. At the toe: Your longest toe should rest about a half inch from the front edge of the toe ox. You should be able to wiggle your toes slightly. At the arch: Extra support is fine here, but the shoe should not raise up so much that pressure is put on your arch.

What would you guys suggest when one heel slips a bit (but only with thin dress socks) and the other doesn't? One foot is slightly smaller than the other. Would sizing down a 1/2 size be too much?

You might try some sort of a liner or insert for the one that's a bit too big. You definitely don't want slippage in the hell. That's going to give you blisters. You could try sizing down, but the obvious risk is then the other shoe is too tight (although it may be possible to have it stretched).

My 8.5UK CT Chestnut Derbys seem like I am going to have some slippage, but frankly I like them too much to get rid of them (and my wife likes them as well, always a bit of a bouns), and I think an 8UK would be too snug in the forefoot. Ergo - I will soon be trying heel liners annd tounge liners, etc... We'll see how it works.
